Francis Curray McHugh, known as Frank McHugh (May 23, 1898 – September 11, 1981), was an American film and television actor.

Biography

McHugh was married to Dorothy Spencer. He had three children and two grandchildren. His brother Matt McHugh and sister Kitty McHugh were also actors who both appeared in many films.

Chester Kent (James Cagney) replaces his failing career as a director of Broadway musicals with a new one as the creator of musical numbers called "prologues", short live stage productions presented in movie theaters before the main feature is shown. He faces pressure from his business partners to constantly create a large number of marketable prologues to service theaters throughout the country, but his job is made harder by a rival who is stealing his ideas, probably with assistance from someone working inside his company. Kent is so overwhelmed with work that he doesn't realize that his secretary, Nan (Joan Blondell), has fallen in love with him, and is doing her best to protect him.

The plot revolves around the convention of the Honeywell Rubber Company in Atlantic City. Throughout the film, the employees of Honeywell Rubber are mainly concerned with drinking and sex. President J.B. Honeywell (Grant Mitchell) is to choose a new company salesmanager. T.R. Kent (Adolphe Menjou) and George Ellerbe (Guy Kibbee) are two salesmen who both want the job. Elmer Kane (Joe E. Brown) is a rookie ballplayer with the Chicago Cubs whose ego is matched only by his appetite. Because he is not only vain but naive, Elmer's teammates take great delight in pulling practical jokes on him. Glory Eden is a radio star, the "Purity Girl" of the Ipsy-Wipsy Wash Cloth radio program, whose sponsor, Sam Ipswich, wants her public image to match her radio persona, and has her constantly chaperoned by the press agent, Speed Dennis. Glory's real personality is one of a party girl, who loves going to nightclubs, drinking, dancing and having a good time. During an interview with the columnist Elmerada de Leon, Glory hints that she might not re-sign with Ipsy-Wipsy. She says that she is tired of always being "the good girl", and needs to let down her hair for a while. Frightened of the prospect of losing their star attraction, and in order to placate her, Ipswich and Dennis hatch a publicity scheme to have her romanced by one of her many fans. They select a most unlikely subject, Jim Davey, who hails from the hills of Kentucky. However, when he arrives, the unlikely happens and Glory begins to fall in love with Jim, and when he proposes, she accepts.

The Progressive Party convention is deadlocked for governor, and so both sides nominate the dark horse Zachary Hicks (Guy Kibbee). Kay Russell (Bette Davis) suggests they hire Hal Blake as campaign manager; but first they have to get him out of jail for not paying alimony. Blake (Warren William) organizes the office and coaches Hicks to answer every question by pausing and then saying, "Well yes, but then again no." Blake will sell Hicks as dumb but honest. Russell refuses to marry Blake, while Joe (Frank McHugh) keeps people away from Blake's office. Blake teaches Hicks a speech by Lincoln. At the debate when the conservative candidate Underwood recites the same speech, Blake exposes him as a plagiarist. Hicks is presented for photo opportunities and gives his yes-and-no answer to any question, including whether he expects to win.
