Biography

Ils écrivent également Down with Love (pour la comédie musicale de Broadway Hooray for What! ), chanson qu'on retrouvera bien plus tard dans le film de 2003 Down with Love. Avec Harburg, Arlen peut développer pleinement ses idées sur les scènes de Broadway : une satire anti-guerre (Hooray For What!, 1937), une évocation du féminisme naissant (Bloomer Girl, 1944) et divers sujets noirs (St. Louis Woman, 1946 ; House of Flowers, 1954 ; Jamaica, 1957)

Dans les années 1940, Arlen fait équipe avec le parolier Johnny Mercer, et continue à écrire des chansons à succès comme Blues in the Night, Out of this World, That Old Black Magic, Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive, Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home, Come Rain or Come Shine et One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)

Arlen a bien cerné deux traits de la personnalité de Judy Garland : la jeune fille innocente et ardente de Over the rainbow et la chanteuse chic lasse du monde de The Man That Got Away dans la version de 1954 de A star is born

Judy Garland plays a superstar singer named Jenny Bowman. She had met a man 15–16 years before who was now a prominent physician (played by British actor Dirk Bogarde). They had a child together whom she let his father raise in England. Jenny wants to finally see him, but in the end is left to the stage. Originally titled The Lonely Stage, it was renamed I Could Go On Singing, so that audiences would know it was the first time Garland sang in a movie since A Star Is Born in 1954. The story is set in 1895 France and takes place predominantly in Paris. However, it begins on a farm in rural Provence. The lovely housecat Mewsette and the accomplished but shy mouser Jaune Tom are in love ("Mewsette"), but the former is frustrated with his plebeian ways (and those of the farm), to the point of calling him a "clumsy country clod". Inspired by the human Jeanette's stories of glamour and sophistication in Paris ("Take My Hand, Paree"), Mewsette runs away by taking a train to the big city ("Roses Red, Violets Blue"), where she encounters the slick con-cat Meowrice (Paul Frees). Taking advantage of the country kitty's naivete, he puts her in the care of the sultry Madame Henretta Reubens-Chatte, who promises to turn Mewsette into a dainty debutante known as "The Belle of all Paris". Unbeknownst to Mewsette, Meowrice is grooming her to be the mail-order bride of a rich American cat in Pittsburgh known as "Mr. Henry Phtt" ("The Money Cat"). Meanwhile, Jaune Tom and his sidekick Robespierre arrive in Paris, searching for Mewsette.

After an angry exchange, Norman rushes away and bursts onto a stage where an orchestra is performing. Blodgett takes him by the hand and pretends he is part of the act, thereby turning a potentially embarrassing and disruptive moment into an opportunity for the audience to greet Norman with applause.

Casbah is a musical remake of the 1938 film Algiers, which was in turn an American English-language remake of the 1936 French film Pépé le Moko. The plot, which follows that of the 1938 film rather faithfully, deals with Pépé le Moko (Tony Martin), who leads a gang of jewel thieves in the Casbah of Algiers, where he has exiled himself to escape imprisonment in his native France. Inez (Yvonne De Carlo), his girl friend, is infuriated when Pépé flirts with Gaby (Marta Toren), a French visitor, but Pépé tells her to mind her own business. Detective Slimane (Peter Lorre) is trying to lure Pépé out of the Casbah so he can be jailed. Against Slimane's advice, Police Chief Louvain (Thomas Gomez) captures Pépé in a dragnet, but his followers free him. Inez realizes that Pépé has fallen in love with Gaby and intends to follow her to Europe. Slimane knows the same and uses her as the bait to lure Pépé out of the Casbah.
