In the future, robots known as Sentinels are exterminating mutants and their human allies. A band of mutants, including Kitty Pryde, Colossus, Iceman, Bishop, Warpath, Blink and Sunspot, evade the Sentinels due to Pryde's ability to send a person's consciousness to the past. Pryde's group convenes with Logan, Storm, Professor Charles Xavier, and Erik Lehnsherr at a monastery in China. Pryde sends Logan's consciousness 50 years back in time to 1973 to prevent Mystique from assassinating Dr. Bolivar Trask, creator of the Sentinels. Following the assassination, Mystique was captured, and her DNA was used by Trask's company to improve the Sentinels, whose ability to adapt to any mutant power makes them almost invincible. Superman (Brandon Routh) has been missing for five years, since traveling to the location where astronomers believed they had discovered the remains of Krypton. Physicist Dr. Reed Richards is convinced evolution was triggered millions of years ago on Earth by clouds of cosmic energy in space, and has calculated that one of these clouds is soon going to pass near Earth. An alcoholic air marshal named Bill Marks boards a Boeing 767 non-stop flight from New York City to London. He sits next to passenger Jen Summers with whom he engages in friendly conversations. After take-off, he receives a text message on his secure phone stating that someone will die every 20 minutes unless $150 million is transferred to a specific bank account. Marks breaks protocol and consults with Jack Hammond, the other air marshal, who concludes that the threat is not valid. Marks however consults the help of Summers and flight attendant Nancy to monitor the security cameras while texting the mysterious person in order to locate him. However, Hammond is texted by the unknown person who says that he knows what is in Hammond's briefcase. As Marks confronts Hammond in the rear lavatory, the latter is revealed to be smuggling cocaine in a brief-case. Hammond attacks Marks, who responds in self-defense and breaks Hammond's neck. This incident happens exactly at the 20-minute mark.

During World War II, Wehrmacht Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (Cruise) is severely wounded during an RAF air raid in Tunisia, losing his right hand, the ring and pinkie finger on his left hand, and his left eye, and is evacuated home to Nazi Germany. After recruiting Stauffenberg into the German Resistance, Olbricht presents Stauffenberg at a meeting of the secret committee which has coordinated previous attempts on Hitler's life. The members include General Ludwig Beck (Stamp), Dr. Carl Goerdeler (McNally), and Erwin von Witzleben (Schofield). Stauffenberg is stunned to learn that no plans exist on the subject of what is to be done after Hitler's assassination.

Psychiatrist Dr. Miranda Grey (Halle Berry) works at a mental hospital and has a car accident after trying to avoid a girl (Kathleen Mackey) on a road during a stormy night while driving back home. After take-off, he receives a text message on his secure phone stating that someone will die every 20 minutes unless $150 million is transferred to a specific bank account. Marks breaks protocol and consults with Jack Hammond, the other air marshal, who concludes that the threat is not valid. Marks however consults the help of Summers and flight attendant Nancy to monitor the security cameras while texting the mysterious person in order to locate him. However, Hammond is texted by the unknown person who says that he knows what is in Hammond's briefcase. As Marks confronts Hammond in the rear lavatory, the latter is revealed to be smuggling cocaine in a brief-case. Hammond attacks Marks, who responds in self-defense and breaks Hammond's neck. This incident happens exactly at the 20-minute mark.

During World War II, Wehrmacht Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (Cruise) is severely wounded during an RAF air raid in Tunisia, losing his right hand, the ring and pinkie finger on his left hand, and his left eye, and is evacuated home to Nazi Germany. Meanwhile, Major General Henning von Tresckow (Branagh) attempts to assassinate Adolf Hitler by smuggling a bomb aboard the Führer's personal airplane. The bomb, however, is a dud and fails to detonate, and Tresckow flies to Berlin in order to safely retrieve it. After learning that the Gestapo has arrested Major General Hans Oster, he orders General Olbricht (Nighy) to find a replacement. After recruiting Stauffenberg into the German Resistance, Olbricht presents Stauffenberg at a meeting of the secret committee which has coordinated previous attempts on Hitler's life. The members include General Ludwig Beck (Stamp), Dr. Carl Goerdeler (McNally), and Erwin von Witzleben (Schofield). Stauffenberg is stunned to learn that no plans exist on the subject of what is to be done after Hitler's assassination.

Psychiatrist Dr. Miranda Grey (Halle Berry) works at a mental hospital and has a car accident after trying to avoid a girl (Kathleen Mackey) on a road during a stormy night while driving back home. She rushes to try to help the girl. The girl turns out to be a ghost and possesses Miranda's body by burning her after she extends her hand to the girl. Miranda loses consciousness. Miranda next wakes up in the very hospital she works for, but as a patient treated by her co-worker, Dr. Pete Graham (Robert Downey, Jr.). Drugged and confused, she remembers nothing of what happened after the car accident. To her horror, she learns that her husband Douglas (Charles S. Dutton) was brutally murdered and that she is the primary suspect. While Miranda copes with her new life in the hospital, the ghost uses her body to carry out messages (most noticeably, she carves the words "not alone" into Miranda's arm), which leads her former colleagues to believe Miranda is suicidal and is inflicting the wounds on herself.
