Ashwathy Kurup, better known by her stage name Parvathy, is an Indian film actress and classical dancer known for her roles in Malayalam films.

Parvathy was a popular actress in Malayalam film industry between 1986 and 1993. Her first film was directed by Lenin Rajendran but was shelved and never released. She was introduced to the industry by actor-director Balachandra Menon through Vivahitharae Ithile Ithile in 1986. Her notable works include Amrutham Gamaya, Oru Minnaminunginte Nurunguvettam, Thoovanathumbikal (1987), Ponmuttayidunna Tharavu (1989), Vadakkunokkiyantram, Peruvannapurathe Visheshangal and Kireedam (1989).

Parvathy married Malayalam film actor Jayaram in 1992, who was her co-star in many films. After marriage, Parvathy effectively quit acting in feature films. She now lives with her family in Chennai. She has two children, National Award winning child actor Kalidas Jayaram and Malavika Jayaram.

Biography

Ashwathy Kurup grew up in Kaviyoor, Thiruvalla. She went to NSS Hindu College, Changanacherry. This was where she was discovered by director Lenin Rajendran who cast her as the lead role in his film. This film was shelved and was never released. She then acted in her first movie Vivahithare Ithile Ithile (1986) directed by Balachandra Menon.

Parvathy met her future husband, Jayaram on the set of Aparan, at Udaya Studio in Thiruvananthapuram, in 1988. After her marriage on 7 September 1992, Parvathy stopped acting and later said that she has no regrets. "One spouse has to sacrifice their career, otherwise, it will be difficult to bring up the children properly. If there is a good salary earned by the husband why should the wife work?"

The couple have two children, Kalidas Jayaram and Malavika. Kalidas Jayaram won the National Film Award for Best Child Artist for his work in the film Ente Veedu Appuvinteyum (2003), in which he acted in along with his father, Jayaram.

Sukumaran, his brother Mohanan and their mother live contently in a middle-class family. Mohanan has recently married Shylaja who is employed unlike Sukumaran’s wife Kanchana. Sukumaran is a supervisor to a company named JK Constructions. Shylaja’s fortunate life with money and job makes Kanchana envious about her and Kanchana slowly starts causing problems in the family by finding unnecessary issues which affects the smooth going of a peaceful family life. Finally Sukumaran leaves their family house and starts living in a rented house as part of Kanchana’s requests. Soon Kanchana finds one or the other reasons to live in luxury which is not conducive with the economical conditions of Sukumaran who is just a supervisor in a company. However he leans for her demands like buying costly home appliances, arranging a dance master for their daughter, sending her to English medium school, buying an old car (which would be destroyed soon) etc. The huge economical demands slowly crush Sukumaran and it finally affects him in the manner of creditors demanding their money back. In order to meet the worst situations Sukumaran finally decides to cheat his employer by forgery. The authorities soon come to know about the truth and one day, when Sukumaran is already under heavy economical pressures, the police arrive and arrest him. The next day, because of the ill reputation caused by the family the house owner arranges people to drive Sukumaran’s family out of their rented house. At this point Mohanan comes to their rescue knowing about the situations where his brother has been led by the ill advice of his wife Kanchana. Mohanan arranges things to release his brother from jail. Finally the family is united where Kanchana understands her mistakes.

The movie starts with a loner named Ben Narendran (Mammootty) writing a suicide note. He mentions that he is committing suicide as he has nothing to do with his life. He chooses to jump in front of the train to perform the act. He waits for the train but end up saving another young man named Janardanan (Jayaram) who has the same intention.
