Robert Ryan plays Jim Wilson, a tough police detective embittered by years of dealing with low-life urban scum. After severely beating several suspects, Jim is assigned to a case far from the city to find the killer of a young girl. Joining the manhunt, in snow-covered terrain, Wilson finds himself paired with the victim's father, Walter Brent (Ward Bond), who plans to shoot the killer himself. When the two men come upon a cabin occupied by Mary Malden (Ida Lupino), a blind woman who is also the killer's sister, Wilson's life is changed forever. Mary, a generous and loving person who has cared for her mentally ill brother Danny (Sumner Williams) since the death of their parents, convinces Wilson to protect Danny from Brent. Wilson also promises to get help for Danny if he surrenders to him. Inspired by Mary's courage and recognizing Brent's rage as the mirror image of his own, Wilson gains the insight to free himself from his own blindness.

U.S. Army lieutenant Duke Halliday (Robert Mitchum) is robbed of a $300,000 payroll by Jim Fiske (Patric Knowles). When Halliday's superior, Captain Vincent Blake (William Bendix), suspects him of having taken part in the theft, Halliday has no choice but to pursue Fiske into Mexico. Along the way, he runs into Joan Graham (Jane Greer), who is after the $2000 she loaned to her boyfriend, Fiske. The two join forces, though they are not sure at first if they can trust each other. Fiske stays one step ahead of the couple, while they are in turn chased by Blake. When Halliday is knocked down trying to stop Fiske from getting away, he comes to the attention of Police Inspector General Ortega (Ramon Novarro). Ortega lets him go after Halliday claims to be Blake (using identification he took from the captain after a brawl), but keeps an eye on him. Steve Hasting est détective dans une société d'assurance. Il est chargé d’enquêter à la suite de la disparition mystérieuse d'un de ses collègues qui enquêtait au Mexique à propos d'un bijou disparu. On ne sait au départ si le collègue est complice ou victime. La sœur du collègue, Victoria Ames, doit justement se rendre au Mexique, Hasting est donc chargé de l'approcher. On apprend qu'elle a rendez-vous avec son frère à la sortie de l'aéroport, mais ce dernier n'y est pas. En fait une bande de trafiquants de bijoux possédant une boite de nuit à Mexico se sert de Victoria comme appât, persuadés qu'elle les mettra sur la piste de son frère et donc du bijou. C'est d'ailleurs ce qui se passe, le frère a été gravement blessé et est abrité chez une famille de paysans. Hasting et Victoria sont bientôt maîtrisés par les gangsters, mais Hasting réussira à les piéger et l'intervention de la police mettra fin à l'affaire.
