William Fairchild is a Director and Scriptwriter British born on 6 january 1918
William Fairchild (Boscastle, Cornouailles, 6 janvier 1918 - Londres, 9 mai 2000) est un écrivain, dramaturge, scénariste et réalisateur britannique.
Après le conflit, il devient scénariste et dramaturge. Certaines de ses pièces, dont The Sound of Murder (1960), jouées avec succès sur les scènes londoniennes, sont adaptées au cinéma. Il passe à la réalisation en 1955. Il est surtout connu pour avoir signé le scénario de Star!, film réalisé par Robert Wise, et mettant en vedette Julie Andrews, qui évoque la carrière de l'actrice britannique Gertrude Lawrence.
Il a également publié deux romans populaires, notamment The Swiss Arrangement (1973), un roman policier mâtiné d'espionnage, traduit en français sous le titre La Face cachée du contrat, dans la collection Le Masque en 1976.

Il fait ses études au Britannia Royal Naval College de Dartmouth et sert comme officier de la marine pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.Après le conflit, il devient scénariste et dramaturge. Certaines de ses pièces, dont The Sound of Murder (1960), jouées avec succès sur les scènes londoniennes, sont adaptées au cinéma. Il passe à la réalisation en 1955. Il est surtout connu pour avoir signé le scénario de Star!, film réalisé par Robert Wise, et mettant en vedette Julie Andrews, qui évoque la carrière de l'actrice britannique Gertrude Lawrence.

The film opens in 1940, with Lawrence in a screening room watching a documentary film chronicling her life, then flashes back to Clapham in 1915, when she leaves home to join her vaudevillian father in a dilapidated Brixton music hall. American couple Mike and Janet Harper (Rod Taylor and Doris Day) move to England for Mike's work, his company which deals in wool textiles and wool fashions. Despite Mike's want for them to live in a flat in the heart of London, Janet, who is not a big city girl, ignores his want and instead finds them a house to rent thirty miles outside of London in Kent, which means that Mike has to commute into town by train. This commute is not ideal for Mike, who often for convenience stays in one of the company's flats in town rather than go home. This commuting situation makes Janet feel even more neglected than she already did previously.

Grant is a hard working Fleet Street newspaper editor who refuses to take a long planned holiday with his wife Susan. Instead, to her annoyance, he stays in his office to deal with a number of urgent stories. These include four children evicted from their home when their mother dies, a woman charged with euthanasia, and a drunken ex-reporter tracking down an atomic scientist. They all culminate in the story of a plane crash, in which Grant is shocked to find his wife listed as one of the passengers. He discovers Susan was leaving him and going away with one of his colleagues.

In 1821, a British sailing ship, the Becket, anchors on the New Zealand coast. Philip Wayne (Hawkins) and Paddy Clarke (Purcell), respectively First Mate and Bos'un, land to explore. They discover a Māori burial cave, but are captured by the local tribe. Accused of sacrilege, they manage to impress the tribesmen enough to be offered a trial by challenge, which Wayne succeeds in. The Māori chief, Hongi Tepe (Inia Te Wiata) is impressed enough to adopt Wayne, and allot him a portion of land. The sailors return to the ship.
