Ichiro Aoye (Toshirō Mifune), an artist, meets a famous young classical singer, Miyako Saijo (Shirley Yamaguchi) whilst working on his paintings in the mountains. After discovering they are both heading for the same location he offers to give her a motorcycle ride to where they are staying. On the way, they are spotted by paparazzi for the tabloid magazine Amour, who track the two down. As Saijo refuses to grant the photographers an interview, they plot their revenge by taking a picture of the couple having breakfast on a balcony and print it under the headline 'The Love Story of Miyako Saijo'.

Professor Shukichi Somiya (Chishu Ryu), a widower, has only one child, a twenty-seven-year-old unmarried daughter, Noriko (Setsuko Hara), who takes care of the household and the everyday needs—cooking, cleaning, mending, etc.—of her father. On a shopping trip to Tokyo, Noriko encounters one of her father's friends, Professor Jo Onodera (Masao Mishima), who lives in Kyoto. Noriko knows that Onodera, who had been a widower like her father, has recently remarried, and she tells him that she finds the very idea of his remarriage distasteful, even "filthy." Onodera, and later her father, tease her for having such thoughts.

Kaneko et Tamai, deux hommes peu scrupuleux s'associent pour acheter à bas prix une maison dans l'espoir de la revendre avec à la clé un juteux bénéfice. Seul obstacle à leur projet, la maison est occupée par la famille d'un peintre sans le sou qui n'a ni les moyens ni l'intention de quitter les lieux. Les deux compères imaginent un stratagème pour forcer la main aux indésirables, installer Midori, la jeune maitresse de Kaneko au tempérament de feu, à l'étage de la maison. Mais les occupants de la maisonnée, le peintre Nomura et sa femme, leur fille Yoko et leur belle-fille Kumiko accueillent avec bienveillance et une inaltérable bonne humeur celle qu'ils prennent pour la fille de Kaneko, leur nouveau propriétaire.
