Balam (George Chakiris) is the son of the ruler of a Mayan tribe who use wooden swords (with obsidian edges). His father is killed in battle against metal-blade armed rivals led by Hunac Ceel (Leo Gordon). Balam succeeds to the throne, but is convinced by his advisers, including the head priest, to lead his followers away from the Yucatán, sail to the American Gulf Coast region, so they might regain their strength and fight again another day.

Quand Jack et Leo, qui depuis sept ans aiment tous les deux Vera, se décident à la demander en mariage, ils découvrent avec consternation, qu'elle a épousé « l'horrible Gédéon ». Pour se remettre de leur déception et tenter d'oublier Vera, ils s'en vont parcourir les forêts du Vermont couvertes de neige, faisant les fous et dormant sous la tente. Mais ils n'arrivent pas à oublier la femme qu'ils aiment, chacun la revoyant, en flashbacks, de façon très personnelle : Leo se souvient de ses visites annuelles à Vera chaque été, tandis que Jack se remémore les visites annuelles qu'il lui faisait chaque hiver. Tout à leurs souvenirs, ils enchainent les cuites, et les péripéties : feu de camp qui devient incendie, chasse à l'ours, découverte d'un arbre à femmes, le réalisateur rendant, au passage hommage à D. W. Griffith et à son film À travers l'orage... Leur rencontre avec deux détenus évadés va mettre un terme à leur périple.

"Two young men, Jack and Leo, are both courting the same girl. For seven long years they persist, but she finally gives herself to the 'horrible Gideon.' In a sense, just as this is the pretext for the film, so the courtships of Vera is a pretext for Jack and Leo to camp out together in the Vermont woods near her home, and to indulge themselves in the wildest of horseplay and high jinks. The film has a Giffithian flavor, a lyrical naivete, which is extremely touching. At the same time it is full of sophisticated film parodies - Rashomon, the New Wave, Douglas Fairbanks, Ma and Pa Kettle. Billy Fisher (Tom Courtenay) lives in Yorkshire with his parents (Wilfred Pickles and Mona Washbourne) and grandmother (Ethel Griffies), and works as an undertakers' clerk overseen by the rigid Mr. Shadrack (Leonard Rossiter). Billy wishes to get away from his stifling job and family life.
