Synopsis
Londres après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Jean Paget, une jeune femme, apprend d'un notaire qu'elle est bénéficiaire d'un important héritage. Lorsqu'on lui demande ce qu'elle va en faire, elle répond qu'elle a décidé d'aller en Malaisie pour construire un puits dans un petit village. Là-bas, elle fait en sorte que le puits soit creusé, afin que les femmes n'aient plus à aller aussi loin. Elle se remémore sa vie dans ce village pendant la guerre.Actors

Three women of widely differing backgrounds walk out of the gates of London's Holloway Prison together at the end of their respective sentences. Monica Marsden (Mitchell) is a well-bred young woman, led into the world of crime by her smooth-talking but crooked lover David (Terence Morgan); Monica martyred herself by taking the fall for a crime he masterminded. Doctor Burnet (Portman), a scholar of ancient history at the British Museum, is obsessed with finding the legendary and priceless Golden Mask of Moloch, believed to be buried in the lost tomb of a Roman general somewhere in the Algerian desert. He plans his latest expedition of discovery, but lacks funds to pay for an archaeologist to accompany him. After serving all his working life with the 'South Star' line, exclusively in cargo ships, Albert Ebbs is finally given command (abeit temporarily) of the SS Queen Adelaide, a cruise liner sailing from London to Sydney. An excellent seaman. he finds that he now has many social obligations that he does not have the skills to fulfill. He must preside at the Captain's Table, host cocktail parties, judge beauty contests and dance with the lady passengers. He must also cope with amorous widows, young couples who want him to marry them and a blustering ex-major who claims to have the ear of the Chairman of the shipping line.
