It was made at Riverside Studios by Hammer Film Productions. With its theme of a man who, after the sudden end of a powerful romance with a beautiful blonde tries to recreate her by altering the appearance of another woman, it is clearly a forerunner of Vertigo directed by Alfred Hitchcock six years later.
Synopsis
Dr. Philip Ritter, a plastic surgeon (Paul Henreid), falls in love with a gifted and beautiful concert pianist, Alice Brent (Lizabeth Scott). They meet by chance at a country inn, and romance soon develops. However, Alice is already engaged to be married and, afraid to tell Ritter, runs away. Ritter is devastated.Actors

Several centuries later, the death of Sir Charles Baskerville is being reported by his best friend Dr. Richard Mortimer (Francis de Wolff) to Sherlock Holmes (Peter Cushing) and Dr. Watson (André Morell), who are willing to meet the new owner of Baskerville Hall, Sir Henry (Christopher Lee). After meeting Sir Henry, Holmes remembers that he is going to be away on another case when Sir Henry returns to Baskerville Hall. Holmes puts Watson in charge of watching over Sir Henry. A tarantula attacks Sir Henry briefly in London; Holmes suspects foul play. Before he leaves, Holmes reminds Watson not to let Sir Henry go out onto the moor after dark.

Mervyn Speight s'évade de prison où il était incarcéré pour meurtre. Un de ses amis engage Hugo Bishop, un avocat apprenti détective privé, pour le retrouver. Il le trouve en effet sur le lieu du meurtre. Mervyn lui dit alors qu'il espère prouver son innocence car il se souvient avoir vu un visage d'homme avant d'être assommé et arrêté. Depuis son arrestation, la femme de Mervyn, Thelma, un rédactrice dans un magazine, vit avec Victor Tasman et prétend être son épouse. Son rédacteur en chef, Maurice Jerrard, est la seule personne à savoir que son vrai mari était en prison. Bishop finit par croire en l'innocence de Mervyn et invite tous les protagonistes à une soirée. Mervyn reconnaît alors Jerrard comme son agresseur. Jerrard s'enfuit, mais finit par tomber et se tuer près de la scène de crime. Désormais libre, Mervyn voyage à travers l'Europe pour que sa femme puisse continuer à vivre avec Tasman.

In Paris during 1890, 104-year-old Georges Bonnet (Diffring) is a sculptor who maintains a youthful appearance by regularly murdering women and using their parathyroid glands as an elixir to ward off the signs of age. When Bonnet requires a vital surgery to be undertaken he asks his old colleague Prof. Ludwig Weiss (Arnold Marlé) to perform it. He declines and Bonnet then blackmails Pierre Gerard (Lee) into performing the operation by endangering the life of Janine Dubois (Hazel Court), a young lady in whom both Bonnet and Gerard are romantically interested.
