Add to a movie listLe Conquérant de l'inutile est un film français réalisé par Marcel Ichac en 1966 à partir du livre Les Conquérants de l'inutile, de son ami Lionel Terray. C'est un film d'hommage à la mémoire de l'auteur, qui venait de mourir d'une chute dans le Vercors en 1965. Il devient un classique du cinéma historique de montagne.
La musique a été composée par François de Roubaix.
Le Conquérant de l'inutile a été présenté au festival de Cannes 1967. Il a été primé dans les festivals de films spécialisés (Festival de Trente, Festival de Banff 1982, etc.).
Synopsis
Biographie du moniteur de ski, guide de haute montagne, alpiniste et cinéaste-conférencier Lionel Terray. Film-portrait d'une figure emblématique de l'alpinisme français des années 1950-1960, reconstituant la vie, les grandes courses et les expéditions du "conquérant" des plus difficiles parois et sommets d'Europe, de l'Himalaya, de la Cordillère des Andes et d'Amérique du Nord. Marcel Ichac réalise en 1966, au lendemain de l'accident du Gerbier, cet hommage illustré en regroupant des documents d'archives personnels, des séquences animées inédites ou extraites des images d'expédition ainsi que les commentaires tirés des textes autobiographiques de Lionel Terray "Les Conquérants de l'Inutile" et « Bataille pour le Jannu ». Ce film, présenté au Festival de Cannes, a été primé de nombreuses fois dans les festivals de films spécialisés, entre autres au Festival de Trente et au Festival de Banff.Actors

Engineer Aron Ralston (James Franco) drives to Utah's Canyonlands National Park for a day of canyoneering. On foot, he befriends hikers Kristi (Kate Mara) and Megan (Amber Tamblyn), and shows them an underground pool. After parting ways with the hikers, Ralston enters Blue John Canyon through a slot canyon. He slips and falls, and a boulder falls and traps his arm against the wall. Failing to move the boulder, he calls for help, but no one is around. He begins recording a video diary on his camera and using the larger blade on his pocket multi-tool to attempt to chip away at the boulder. He also rations his water and food.

Both climbers successfully reach the summit of the previously unclimbed West Face of Siula Grande in Peru. Joe is injured during the descent after falling, resulting in a badly broken leg. The pair decide to lower Joe with the help of ropes on the steep snowy slope, while an enormous storm rages on. Simon cannot see where he is lowering Joe and Joe eventually drops off a cliff and is suspended by the rope in mid-air. Simon arrests his fall, but neither sees the predicament his partner is in nor hears him, due to the severity of the storm.

The Italian mountaineer Jean-Antoine Carrel wants to be the first man to reach the summit of the Matterhorn. He meets the British mountaineer Whymper and they decide to climb together. But due to an intrigue this agreement is dropped and the two men try it on the same day with two different teams, Carrel on the Italian side and Whymper on the Swiss side. The latter will successfully reach the summit along with his six companions, Hudson, Hadow, Douglas and the guides Croz and Taugwalder father and son.
