En proie à d'étranges impulsions, Charles Beaumont se marie comme prévu à Claire Lapopie. Mais le mariage, et surtout la nuit de noces, sont catastrophiques. The story takes place in Marseille, where Marius, the son of a barkeeper César, has a romance with Fanny, neighbourhood girl of the fish sales man in the harbor. Marius dreams of sailing away one day and travel the seven seas. Fanny soon discovers she is pregnant of Marius, a shameful position in their community since she's a single mother with a father unable to secure the future of her and her child. She agrees with her mother and father's advice to marry a more prosperous salesman in the harbor, Honoré Panisse, who is 30 years older than she is. A few months after the marriage and the birth of the baby Marius returns and tries to win back Fanny.

The film follows the comings and goings at the Hôtel du Nord on the banks of the Canal St. Martin in Paris. The films begins with the gathering of many of the hotel's occupants around the dinner table for the first communion of Michèle, who lives in the hotel with her policeman father, Maltaverne. Madame Lecouvreur tells Michèle to bring a piece of cake upstairs to Raymonde (Arletty), who is talking with her boyfriend, Edmond (Louis Jouvet). A prostitute, Raymonde leaves Edmond, a photographer, who wants to develop his film. In the meantime, a young couple, Renée (Annabella) and Pierre (Jean-Pierre Aumont), enter the hotel and rent a room for the night. Once alone, Renée and Pierre discuss their plan to kill themselves as they feel they have nothing left to live for. Pierre pulls out a gun and shoots Renee, but then loses his confidence and is unable to shoot himself too. Edmond hears the shots next door and breaks into the room to find Pierre standing over Renée's body. Telling Pierre to escape, Edmond lies to the police and says he found the girl alone lying dead in the room. Raymonde, having stopped to have a drink with the celebration downstairs, is still in the hotel when the police arrive, and is put in jail for four days when an officer finds that her papers are not in order.

Frédéric Gari est arrêté pour contrebande de tabac. Il jure de se venger de celui qui l'a trahi quand il sortira de prison. Le même jour, Urbain Coindet, fermier et conseiller municipal de Cantagrel, trouve à son retour du marché sa femme Aurélie pendue. Les nouvelles vont vite et son beau-père fait courir le bruit que c'est Urbain l'assassin. Capucet, ivrogne, mais représentant de la loi, décide d'ouvrir une enquête que le curé arrête bien vite, car elle provoque une certaine effervescence dans le petit pays, d'autant plus qu'Urbain fait à nouveau la cour à une belle et jeune femme, Jeanne Gari, la sœur du contrebandier. Le village est partagé en deux clans, qui s'affrontent autant sur le plan local, que sur celui de la politique. Républicains et cléricaux basent leur campagne sur l'innocence ou la culpabilité d'Urbain. Grâce à Victor, on finira par découvrir que c'est Capucet le coupable involontaire de cette mésentente.
