In the film, the character Devereaux is closely based on French politician Dominique Strauss-Kahn. It tells the story of a powerful man, a possible candidate for the Presidency of France, who lives a life of debauchery and is arrested after being accused of raping a maid at his hotel.
Ever since the death of their teenage daughter Emily, Doug (James Gandolfini) and Lois (Melissa Leo) Riley have been drifting apart. Because of her grief, Lois has become a cold and distant agoraphobic causing Doug to have an affair with Vivian, a younger local waitress. However, Lois manages to maintain her appearance and the presentation of her home despite never leaving and inviting no guests aside from her sister, Harriet. She has even already had headstones put next to their daughter's for them both and made funeral plans.
Timothy (Tanner Cohen) is an openly gay student at a private boy's school. Although now in his senior year, he is still persecuted by the aggressive rugby team, on whose captain, Jonathon (Nathaniel David Becker), he has a crush. Timothy lives with his mother, Donna (Judy McLane), who is struggling with her son's sexuality and with getting a job, and his father who is not a part of his life.

Felix (played by Sigurd Rachman) is visited in West Berlin by an American friend from Los Angeles (played by Andy Lucas). The two make a day trip to East Berlin where they meet Thomas (played by Rainer Strecker). Thomas and Felix fall in love but are divided by the Wall, much like all of Germany at the time. Felix tries to keep their relationship strong by making regular visits to Thomas in the East, but this raises the suspicions of the East German authorities. Eventually, Thomas seeks to flee to West Germany by flying to Prague, where a Czech friend has arranged a contact with an escape helper.
In 1981, Camp Firewood, a summer camp located near Waterville, Maine, is preparing for its last day of camp. Counselors have one last chance to have a romantic encounter with another person at Camp Firewood. The summer culminates in a talent show.
A mother, her son and daughter, and the daughter's girlfriend are out in the woods on a camping trip. While the mother and son head to a cabin, the daughter and her girlfriend go to a clearing, where they have sex. While the two women fornicate, they are happened upon by a machete-wielding man in an orange balaclava, who forces the two to perform various sexual acts on him, and each other. While her girlfriend is fellating the masked man, the daughter flees, with the man giving chase after he stabs the girlfriend in the crotch with his machete.
Lannie Waters (Traci Lords) wakes after dreaming about nude women floating in space. She wonders aloud about her sexuality and inexperience. Her mother (Helga Sven) brings up boys and tells her about a new man, Mr. Kennedy(Don Hodge), whom she believes likes Lannie, but who is too shy to say anything.

Maintenant, ils passent au-dessus de la bouche d’aération du métro que nous remarquons enfin à quelques mètres de la caméra. Sous le puissant souffle souterrain, la robe de la jeune femme se soulève alors et découvre les mollets et les genoux avant d’être rabattue prestement. » La jeune femme éclate de rire et le couple effectue une sortie de champ.
Paul Greco (Jon Lindstrom) is a wealthy man who has sold his business and has retired. His sister Elise (Wendie Malick) gives him a dog. Paul assumes the daily dog-walking routine in the park where he encounters Andy Chance (Chris Murrah), a gay self-employed advertising whiz, who happens to own a dog himself. The daily meeting develops into a tender series of situations between the two as conversations exchanged become more and more involved and sincere.
