En 1970, Farrokh Bulsara, un immigré parsi, est étudiant en art et travaille comme bagagiste à l'aéroport de Londres-Heathrow. Un soir, dans une petite boîte de nuit, il découvre sur scène le groupe de rock Smile, alors composé du guitariste Brian May, du batteur Roger Taylor et du chanteur-bassiste Tim Staffell. Ce dernier annonce aux deux autres qu'il a décidé de quitter la formation pour rejoindre un autre groupe qui lui semble plus prometteur. Après le concert, Farrokh se présente à Brian May et Roger Taylor, qui sont alors dépités. Ils ne prennent pas au sérieux ce jeune homme au look étrange et Roger Taylor, alors étudiant en médecine dentaire, se moque même de sa denture si particulière, mais Farrokh leur fait une démonstration de ses capacités en chant qui les fait changer d'avis. Après des débuts hésitants, ils sont rejoints par le bassiste John Deacon. Le groupe se renomme Queen, alors que Farrokh choisit comme nouveau nom Freddie Mercury, malgré les réticences de son père. Le groupe commence à se faire remarquer, notamment par les performances scéniques de Freddie, qui demande par ailleurs en mariage Mary Austin, une vendeuse de vêtements qu'il fréquente depuis plusieurs mois et qui l'aide à créer ses costumes de scène.

Autrefois, Imelda Rivera était mariée à un musicien talentueux. Ce dernier avait quitté sa femme et sa fille, Coco, pour poursuivre sa carrière musicale. Dans le présent, son arrière-arrière-petit-fils, Miguel, âgé de 12 ans, vit avec sa famille, et Coco, son arrière-grand-mère, dans le petit village mexicain de Santa Cecilia. Il rêve de devenir un musicien comme Ernesto de la Cruz, vedette de la chanson et du cinéma, de la même génération qu'Imelda (ce dernier est mort lors d'une représentation, quand une énorme cloche lui est tombée sur la tête). Lors des préparatifs de la Fête des Morts, Miguel casse accidentellement le cadre de la photographie d'Imelda, au centre de l'autel, et découvre que son mari (dont la tête a été arrachée de la photographie) tenait la célèbre guitare blanche d'Ernesto. Plus tard dans la soirée, quand Miguel fait part à sa famille de son intention de participer au concours de talents du Jour des Morts, sa grand-mère Elena détruit sa guitare. Furieux, il quitte la maison et se dirige vers le cimetière de la ville.

In the Pride Lands of Africa, a lion rules over the animals as king. Long ago, a drop of sunlight became a golden flower capable of healing illness, decay and injury. For hundreds of years the flower is used by Mother Gothel to retain her youth until it is discovered by soldiers of a nearby kingdom. They use the flower to heal their ailing queen, who soon after gives birth to Princess Rapunzel. Gothel discovers that Rapunzel's hair has the flower's healing properties but that attempting to take just the hair by cutting it destroys its power, so she kidnaps Rapunzel and raises her as her own daughter in an isolated tower. Once a year, the King and Queen release sky lanterns on Rapunzel's birthday, hoping for their daughter's return.

Blu brings a fanny pack full of supplies, one of which he uses mostly is a GPS, much to Jewel's displeasure.
