Richard John "Dick" Grayson is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics, commonly in association with Batman.
Created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger and illustrator Jerry Robinson, he first appeared in Detective Comics #38 in April 1940 as the original incarnation of Robin. The youngest in a family of acrobats known as the "Flying Graysons", Dick watches a mafia boss kill his parents in order to extort money from the circus that employed them. Batman (Bruce Wayne) takes him in as a legal ward (retconned as an adopted son in some cases) and the crime-fighting partner Robin. He is written by many authors as the first son of Batman. Many, including OMAC, state that he is the one that Batman cares about the most. Throughout his adolescence, Batman and Robin fight their war on crime side-by-side.
As he grows older and spends more time as the leader of the Teen Titans, Grayson retires as Robin and takes on his own superhero identity to assert his independence (while others would fill in as Robin). Created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist George Pérez, he first appeared in Tales of the Teen Titans #44 (July 1984) as Nightwing. He leads the Teen Titans and later the Outsiders. In the first volume of his eponymous series (1996–2009), he becomes the protector of Blüdhaven, Gotham's economically troubled neighboring city, the locale the character is most closely associated with. He has also served stints protecting the streets of New York, Chicago and Gotham in other runs over the years.
Dick Grayson has taken on the identity of Batman on a few occasions. Following "Batman: Knightfall", Grayson declines taking up the mantle of Batman while the original was recovering from a broken back as he feels Nightwing is a hero in his own right and not Batman's understudy, but after the events of the Zero Hour miniseries later that year, he replaces Bruce Wayne as Batman, beginning in Robin #0 (1994) and extending throughout the Batman: Prodigal storyline in 1995. Dick again assumes the mantle following the events of "Batman R.I.P." (2008) and Final Crisis (2008–9). As Batman, Dick moves to Gotham following his mentor's apparent death and takes on Damian Wayne as Robin. On Bruce's return, both men maintained the Batman identity until 2011, when Dick returned to the Nightwing identity with DC's The New 52 continuity refresh. In a 2014 comic story, Dick is forced to abandon the Nightwing identity after being unmasked on TV and faking his death; in Tim Seeley's critically acclaimed Grayson comic book, Dick becomes Batman's mole in the nefarious spy organization Spyral. In current DC Comics continuity, Dick Grayson is known as Agent 37.
Dick Grayson has appeared as Robin in several other media adaptations: the 1943 serial played by Douglas Croft, the 1949 serial played by Johnny Duncan, the 1966–1968 live action Batman television series and its motion picture portrayed by Burt Ward, played by Chris O'Donnell in the 1995 film Batman Forever and its 1997 sequel Batman & Robin. Loren Lester voiced the character as Robin in Batman: The Animated Series and later as Nightwing's first screen adaptation in The New Batman Adventures. In May 2011, IGN ranked Dick Grayson #11 on their list of the "Top 100 Super Heroes of All Time". In 2013, ComicsAlliance ranked Grayson as Nightwing as #1 on their list of the "50 Sexiest Male Characters in Comics".
Biography
Richard « Dick » Grayson est le plus jeune membre d'une famille d'acrobates et trapézistes connue sous le nom des « Flying Graysons ». Dick est témoin d'une tentative d'extorsion d'argent auprès du cirque qui les emploie. Le directeur du cirque ayant refusé de payer, le mafieux Tony Zucco sabote le spectacle des Flying Graysons entraînant la mort de toute la famille. Dick est le seul survivant. Il est recueilli après la mort de ses parents par Bruce Wayne (alter-ego de Batman). Dick souhaite venger la mort de ses parents, et demande à son tuteur de retrouver le coupable. Bruce Wayne refuse, voulant le convaincre du caractère vain de cet acte. En voulant se faire justice lui-même, il découvre que Batman est Bruce Wayne. Il demande alors au Chevalier noir de l'aider et prend l'identité de Robin.Tout en combattant le crime aux côtés de Batman, il fonde avec Kid Flash et Aqualad l'équipe des Teen Titans, une équipe de super-héros adolescents dont il devient le leader. Devenu un jeune homme, Dick Grayson prend de plus en plus de distance avec son mentor. Une dispute éclate entre Dick et Bruce quand Robin est blessé par le Joker. Batman finit par le chasser en lui interdisant de reprendre le costume.
Dick Grayson retourne auprès des Jeunes Titans pour sauver ses amis qui avaient été trahis. Il s'émancipe définitivement de son mentor et prend une nouvelle identité de héros, Nightwing. Ce nouveau nom lui a été inspiré par une histoire kryptonienne que Superman lui a racontée.
Dans le premier volume de sa série du même nom (1996 - 2009), il devient le protecteur de Blüdhaven, une cité corrompue proche de Gotham City.
Il développe des relations amoureuses avec plusieurs personnages féminins au fil des séries : Barbara Gordon, alias Oracle et ancienne Batgirl, mais aussi avec Starfire, princesse extra-terrestre ou Huntress, membre de l'équipe fondée par Oracle, les Birds of Prey. Il alla jusqu'à demander la main de Starfire. La cérémonie avait bien démarré mais fut stoppée par une attaque de Trigon. Il se fiança quelques années plus tard avec Barbara Gordon. Mais Barbara finit par lui rendre la bague de fiançailles suite aux événements d'Infinite Crisis (2006).
Nightwing est également le leader des Outsiders, qu'il a rejoint à contre-cœur, après la dissolution des Titans, à la suite du décès de Donna Troy.
Robin devient Batman
Dick Grayson dû prendre l'identité de Batman à quelques occasions.
Une première fois, suite aux évènements de Batman: KnightFall. Le temps que Bruce Wayne finisse de récupérer de sa blessure au dos, Dick devient Batman le temps de l'arc narratif Le Fils prodigue (1995).
Dick reprend la cape du Batman à la suite du décès apparent de Bruce Wayne lors de la saga Final Crisis de Grant Morrison (2008).
Refusant de reprendre le rôle de Batman dans un premier temps, et bien qu'il ait eu du mal à l'admettre au début, il finit par se faire une raison : sans Bruce, lui seul peut incarner Batman. C'est son héritage et son devoir de ne pas laisser Batman entre des mains douteuses comme dans Battle for The Cowl de Tony Daniel où les prétendants au rôle s'affrontent sans merci.
Il retourne à Gotham City, et fait équipe avec le nouveau Robin, Damian Wayne, le fils de Bruce et de Talia al Ghul. Tim Drake, précédent Robin, a pris son indépendance pour devenir Red Robin.
La relation Dick / Damian est assez explosive, la série Batman & Robin de Morrison se transformant en Batman vs Robin le temps de quelques numéros.
Dans The Return of Bruce Wayne, de Grant Morrison, Bruce Wayne revient à la vie en 2010 dans une mini-série de six épisodes. Suite à ce retour dans le présent, Batman arbore un nouveau costume. Il laisse Dick Grayson continuer son activité de justicier sous le nom de Batman avec son fils Damian Wayne comme nouveau Robin, trouvant qu'ils font de l'excellent travail à Gotham City. Il décide de parcourir le globe pour former un groupe (une « corporation ») de héros ayant une similarité avec lui, s'étant résolu à une vérité : le monde entier a besoin d'un Batman. En France, il recrute Bilal Asselah, alias Nightrunner que Dick Grayson a formé aux arts martiaux, au maniement d'armes et autres gadgets comme les autres membres de Batman Inc.
The New 52
Après la saga de Flashpoint, l'Univers DC est à nouveau restructuré et Dick Grayson redevient Nightwing.
Dans Nightwing : Pièges et Trapèzes, le Cirque Haly revient en ville pour la première fois depuis que ses parents ont été assassinés. Le vieil Haly, le directeur du cirque, meurt dans les bras de Dick après lui avoir avoué que le cirque détient un terrible secret et lui avoir donné l'acte de propriété du cirque. En enquêtant sur ce secret, Nightwing va découvrir les origines de sa famille et devra faire face à la Cour des Hiboux.
À la suite de la saga Forever Evil (2014), Dick est forcé d'abandonner l'identité de Nightwing après avoir été démasqué devant la télévision. Il falsifie sa mort et disparaît. Dick Grayson obtient sa propre série, Grayson, scénarisée par Tim Seeley. Il y infiltre une organisation d'espions, Spyral, pour le compte de Batman. En tant qu'Agent 37, il démantèle divers complots terroristes avec Helena Bertinelli comme partenaire.
DC Rebirth
Avec le relaunch DC de 2016, une nouvelle série Nightwing est lancée. Dick Grayson retrouve son costume noir et bleu suite à la restauration de son identité secrète dans le dernier numéro de la série Grayson. Nightwing y fait équipe avec un justicier du nom de Raptor dans le but d'infiltrer et de détruire de l'intérieur la Cour des Hiboux. Mais les méthodes douteuses de Raptor, pousse Dick à s'opposer à celui-ci.
Après avoir fait face à la noirceur de Gotham City lors de « La Nuit des Monstres (Night of the Monster Men) », Dick a besoin d'un nouveau départ, il s'installe à Blüdhaven.

Since his last encounter against Batman, Mr. Freeze has found a home in the Arctic and started a family (of sorts) with the still cryogenically-encased Nora, an Inuit boy named Kunac, and two pet polar bears, Hotchka and Shaka. Nora's condition begins to rapidly deteriorate due to a submarine accidentally emerging from underwater directly underneath them, shattering her containment vessel. Freeze returns to Gotham City with his companions. He enlists the help of Dr. Gregory Belson to find a cure. Belson determines that Nora needs an organ transplant, but due to her rare blood type there are no suitable donors available.

Batman and Robin fail to stop Mr. Freeze from stealing a cache of diamonds. They learn that Freeze was once a scientist named Victor Fries, who became dependent on a diamond-powered subzero suit following an accident in a cryogenics lab while working to save his wife, Nora, from a terminal illness called MacGregor's Syndrome.

In Gotham City, Batman stops a hostage situation in a bank caused by Two-Face, the alter ego of the disfigured former district attorney, Harvey Dent. However, Two-Face escapes. Edward Nygma, a researcher at Wayne Enterprises, develops a device to beam television directly to a person's brain; Bruce Wayne—with whom Nygma is obsessed—rejects the invention, noting that it "raises too many questions", and Nygma angrily resigns from his position after killing his supervisor Fred Stickley, and forging his suicide note and footage. Everybody except Bruce is convinced it was a genuine suicide. During a news report, it shows how Harvey Dent became Two-Face: While he was prosecuting Sal Maroni, Maroni threw acid in Harvey's face; Batman tried to stop him but failed. After meeting Batman-obsessed psychiatrist Dr. Chase Meridian, Bruce invites her to a charity circus event. There, Two-Face and his henchmen storm the event in an attempt to discover Batman's secret identity, and in the process murder The Flying Graysons, a family of acrobats who attempt to stop him. The youngest member, Dick, survives and throws Two-Face's bomb into the river to detonate safely underwater but the rest of the family dies.

When Batman (West) and Robin (Ward) get a tip that Commodore Schmidlapp (Reginald Denny) is in danger aboard his yacht, they launch a rescue mission using the batcopter. As Batman descends on the bat-ladder to land on the yacht it suddenly vanishes beneath him. He rises out of the sea with a shark attacking his leg. After Batman dislodges it with bat-shark repellant, the shark explodes. Batman and Robin head back to Commissioner Gordon's office, where they deduce that the tip was a set-up by the United Underworld, a gathering of four of the most powerful villains in Gotham City (Joker, Penguin, Riddler and Catwoman).
