A is a 1998 Indian Kannada-language blockbuster psychological love story film written and directed by Upendra. It starred Upendra and Chandini as the lead couple. It tells the love story between a film director and an actress which is narrated through multiple flashbacks within flashbacks and reverse screenplay. The film deals with dark truths of the film world like the casting couch. Due to the reverse screenplay, some audience members watched it multiple times to understand the story. The opening sequence of the movie reminds of Jean-Paul Satre's short story "Erostratus", found in 1939 collection of short stories The Wall (short story collection)


Upon release, A collected more than ₹20 crore at the box office. The movie was dubbed into Telugu and released in Andhra Pradesh. The film was remade in Tamil as Adavadi. It was Gurukiran's first film as a music director. Upendra won the Udaya Film Award for Best Male Actor (1998) and Gurukiran won the Udaya Film Award for Best Music Director (1998).

Synopsis

A foreign woman, Marina, wants to distribute the unreleased controversial film A directed by Soorya. However the censor board permits only twenty random minutes to be screened and the climax is censored to such an extent that it no longer made any sense. She suggests its producers to re-shoot the film. However, Soorya is not in a position to participate in the film's shoot as he became a drunkard after actress Chandini, who debuted with his film, rejects his love. Soorya's family is unable to meet their ends after he stops directing films. Lost in her thoughts, he wanders near her house every night drunk, only to be expelled by her henchmen.

Betala begins to narrate one of his puzzling tales to Vikramāditya which is the story of Naanu (translates to I/Me/Myself), an ego-driven selfish rogue and the three women in his life. Naanu since childhood hates hypocrisy and always speaks the truth. In the process, he exposes the truth behind everything. A young woman Rathi comes to know her father's hatred towards her in this process and falls in love with Naanu. However she finds out that Naanu wants to marry a billionaire Keerthi whose deceased father decides that her husband would inherit her entire wealth. He prints wedding cards and distributes it to all, including the employees working in Keerthi's establishments. This angers Keerthi who orders her guardian's son (who wants to marry her for the same reason) to attack Naanu. They bring a woman Swathi, who lives in his house and toture her. Naanu comes to her rescue and it is revealed that Swathi is Naanu's wife.

The story revolves around miser parents (Bank Janardhan and Satyabhama) who want their son (Jaggesh) to marry a rich girl, for dowry. But the son ends up marrying a poor girl, antagonizing his parents. How son changes his parents outlook forms rest of the story. Santosh is the son of Parandamaiah Urbagal (Bank Janardhan) and Subbalakshmi (Satyabhama), who are staunch misers. Parandamaiah owns a shop, called 'Oorubaglu General Stores'. Santosh likes to keep the shop as he loves Sangeetha, daughter of Shankar Shastry, a musician, whose house is opposite Santosh's shop. Santosh spends his time sightseeing (the subject is mostly Sangeetha) and he is hostile towards costumers when he is sightseeing (he calls it 'Dove Hodiyodu', one of his popular dialogues). His friends - 'Chitke' Seena, Raja, 'Razor' Manja, Nanja and 'nanjappan maga' Gunjappa. They help Santosh to gain Sangeetha's affection. However, Parandamaiah and Satyabhama decide to marry Santosh to his uncle's daughter Sundari for dowry. However, Santosh disagrees to marry any girl for dowry as he wants his wife to be the love of his life. Santosh succeeds in marrying Sangeetha by hoodwinking his parents. Later, with the help of his friends, he starts to enjoy his married life. But, Parandamaiah and Satyabhama decide to cheat Santosh and create a feud between Santosh and Sangeetha. They make Sangeetha assume that Santosh is having a sexual relationship with Sundari. Meanwhile, they make Santosh assume Sangeetha is having an extramarital affair. Santosh investigates this and he assumes that Sangeetha is having an affair (the assumed boyfriend was paid by Parandamaiah). Due to this, Sangeetha goes back to her maternal home. Soon Santosh finds out about this, and, with the help of his friends, makes his parents realize that good values are more important than money. Later, after he makes his parents realise their mistake, his uncle finds that Sundari is pregnant. He allegedly accuses Santosh of impregnating Sundari. However, this is not the case as he had told his friends to loaf and flirt with Sundari to enlighten his parents. Later, Santosh arranges for the marriage of Sundari. in the climax, Santosh finds that Gunjappa had impregnated Sundari and he is forced to marry Sundari.
