L'histoire vraie du braqueurs de banque hongrois Attila Ambrus, extrêmement populaire en Hongrie, dont la particularité était de boire du whisky dans les bars pour se donner du courage avant ses braquages. Après avoir souffert d'une enfance difficile, devenu joueur de hockey sur glace professionnel, il se lance dans une nouvelle carrière dans les années 90 tout en dévalisant une trentaine de banques et de bureaux de poste. Véritable gentleman, il offrait des bouquets de fleurs aux caissières. Mais un beau jour, alors qu'il revient sur ses pas pour récupérer son chien, la police l'arrête avant qu'il ne puisse se sauver. En détention, il se remémore de sa vie, de son enfance passée une grand-mère qu'il adorait avant d'être confié à un internat très strict. Puis vient le temps de l'armée, sa désertion, son début de gardian dans une équipe de hockey sur glace, son sport professionnel depuis son enfance, avant qu'il ne devienne un criminel célèbre.

Infamous Ma Webster rules her clan of mobsters – mainly consisting of her three more or less criminally inclined sons – with an iron hand and without mercy. She is the terror of Centre City. She refuses to let anyone else handle the planning of all the clan's robberies, much to George Frost's dismay. George is the only clan member who isn't related to Ma Webster. George protests and makes a fuss about this, but to no avail. Ma and her sons Eddie, Charlie and Tom team up with George on Christmas Eve itself to rob the Centre City bank. They are warned, however, by Bert, Ma's more lawful son, who studies law and disdains the criminal behaviour of the rest of his family. Bert urges his mother and his brothers to get out of town to prevent them from being arrested for previous crimes the police and the FBI have found evidence of.

The story begins with a newsreel summing up the gangster life of John Dillinger in detail. At the end of the newsreel, Dillinger's father (Victor Kilian) walks onto the stage and speaks to the movie audience about his son's childhood back in Indiana. He talks of John’s childhood as having been ordinary and not very eventful, but concedes that his son had ambitions and wanted to go his own way. The young Dillinger left his childhood town to find his fortune in Indianapolis, but soon ran out of money. The scene fades to a restaurant, where he is on a date and finds himself humiliated by the waiter who refuses to accept a check for the meal; unable to pay for the meal, he excuses himself, runs into a nearby grocery store and robs it for $7.20 in cash. He makes the clerk at the store believe he has a gun in his hand under the jacket.

Leo Martin (Hartnell) works for a criminal gang run by Gus Loman (Lovell) that primarily uses a smash and grab tactic. During one particular risky robbery heist, Leo breaks the window at a jewelry store only to have his wrists broken by a gate falling. He is soon caught and brought to prison to serve his term. Throughout his stay, Leo does not reveal who he is working for to the authorities but instead serves his time angered by Gus for running out on him during the robbery.
