Anand Math is a 1952 Hindi patriotic-historical film directed by Hemen Gupta, based on Anandamath, the famous Bengali novel written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1882. The novel and film are set in the events of the Sannyasi Rebellion, which took place in the late 18th century in Bengal.

The film starred Prithviraj Kapoor, Bharat Bhushan, Geeta Bali, Pradeep Kumar and Ajit in the lead. Pradeep Kumar was making his debut in Hindi Cinema, as was the film's music director Hemant Kumar. Hemant had already been working in Bengali Cinema for a while, but then shifted to Mumbai to start a career in Hindi Cinema. With this film, Hemant Kumar took a staff position as a composer with S. Mukherjee's Filmistan Studios.

The story is about King Karma Dev who gives a lot of importance to physical beauty. His mother the Rajmata requests Mahamantri Munjal to find him a nice wife. Karma Dev often dreams of marrying an unknown beautiful woman he had once seen in the Somnath temple. On the day of the marriage, the King finds out she is dark and refuses to marry her. After several incidents Karma Dev realizes his mistake and at last he happily accepts Mrinalla as his Patrani.

The film depicts the life of one-time wealthy and noble poet Mirza Ghalib. The story revolves around his trials, successes and failures and his ultimate descent into poverty. Mirza Yusuf Changezi (Bharat Bhushan) and Jahan Ara (Mala Sinha) have been good friends since childhood. Things are not quite the same as they grow up, as Jahan Ara's father is none other than Emperor Shah Jahan, and men are not permitted to meet with the princess under any circumstances. However, Jahan and Mirza do meet secretly and promise to marry each other. Misfortune visits the emperor, when his wife, Mumtaz Mahal (Achala Sachdev), passes away. The emperor gets deeply devastated, and, still mourning his wife's death, he pledges to build a memorial in her name (which would subsequently be called Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders on Earth). At her deathbed, Mumtaz makes Jahan promise that she will take care of her father, which she promises to do. This responsibility makes her sacrifice her love for Mirza, who is heartbroken and continues to believe that Jahan will sooner or later reunite with him.

Geeta and Rita are sisters of Mr. Verma, the owner of Nan Ching Chung hotel. Rita is in love with Brij and Geeta helps her elope and get married. Geeta is infatuated by Pradeep, a singer and musician. When she finds out he is in town she makes several attempts to meet him but fails. Pradeep meets Geeta when she is helping Rita elope and in some scuffle and misunderstanding he thinks Geeta is trying to escape some people out to get her. He helps take her to the police station where she claims to have been abducted by Pradeep himself. Mr. Verma arrives and fed up with his daughters antics he sends them to another town where they enroll in a school to learn music. The music teacher is Pradeep, a fact Geeta knew from before. She again helps her sister to go off on her honeymoon with her husband, while pretending to be Rita to keep up pretenses of her still being at the academy. Her masquerade leads to several funny situations in the film. Eventually the situation unravels, the father accepts Rita's wedding and Geeta and Pradeep are united.
