The plot centres around moody 17-year-old Mathilde (Paradis) who lived separated from her parents. Her philosophy teacher François (Cremer), happens to stumble across her path and is eager to help her learn more. He starts to come over to her house everyday going over her homework, and teaching her the art of the study. Eventually, Mathilde starts placing little hints that she finds the 47-year-old François attractive. He tries to resist her, but he finds himself falling for her as well. They soon blossom into a passionate love, but they must keep their affair a secret from his wife (Mikaël) and the school. Later François's wife finds out about the affair because her husband comes home late and Mathilde calls his house until he answers.

À la mort de sa grand-mère, Bruno, un rêveur de 13 ans, revient dans une cité de la banlieue parisienne à Bagnolet. D'un niveau scolaire très bas, il entre dans un C.E.S. (Collège d'Enseignement Secondaire) ; il y rencontrera Jean-Roger, la terreur de l'établissement et y fera l'apprentissage de la violence de leur banlieue. Bruno fait la connaissance de sa professeure principale qui le prend sous son aile. Jean-Roger admire son père, Marcel, un ancien militaire devenu truand. Parallèlement à cela, Jean-Roger est jaloux de son frère Thierry et du couple qu'il forme avec une journaliste. La jeune femme est violée par Jean-Roger et sa bande. Thierry intervient, mais il est pourchassé par la bande. Le père le sauve, muni d'un fusil. Il tue trois des participants au tabassage de Thierry. Jean-Roger, qui a un pistolet, riposte et tue, sans vraiment le vouloir, son père... et, accessoirement, le serin de Bruno qui s'était échappé de l'appartement. Bruno trouve le serin mort et le pistolet que Jean-Roger, ivre, a abandonné ; désespéré de la mort de son seul vrai ami, Bruno retourne l'arme contre lui et se suicide. Jean-Roger finit en prison à Fleury-Mérogis, d'où il écrira une lettre à son ex-professeure principale.

Paul and Jessie Duncan (Greg Kinnear and Rebecca Romijn) are a happily married couple who have an eight-year-old son named Adam (Cameron Bright). The day after his eighth birthday, when fetching a basketball he was given into the street, Adam is killed in a collision. While leaving a church, Jessie and Paul are confronted by Dr. Richard Wells (Robert De Niro), an old professor of Jessie's. He offers to clone Adam, an illegal procedure which would require a change of location and identity, to which the Duncans reluctantly agree. Everything appears to be fine with the new Adam until he reaches his eighth birthday. That night, he experiences a violent nightmare. Richard explains to Paul that it is typical for boys his age to have night terrors, and that it is not serious. He explains that because Adam II has reached the age at which the original Adam died, his life cannot be predicted anymore. From that moment on, Adam II continues to have night terrors until they become visions and he starts having them when he's wide awake, losing control of his actions.

Manuela von Meinhardis, whose mother had died when she was young and father serves in the military, is enrolled at an all-girls boarding school headed by the traditional and iron-fisted Fräulein von Nordeck zur Nidden. Manuela is immediately exposed to the strictness of the school when both receiving her uniform as well as having many of her possessions taken from her. Lincoln Hawk is a struggling trucker who arm wrestles on the side to make extra cash while trying to rebuild his life. Shortly before the war, strange things happen at night at the School of Saint-Agil. Students begin to disappear... Three students of Saint-Agil, Beaume Sorgue and Macroy, have created a secret society to prepare leaving for America. One evening, one of them, Sorgue, sees a man through a wall in the natural sciences class. He then disappears after having been sent to the principal's office. When Macroy vanishes in turn, the whole institution is in turmoil. The last member of the secret society still at school, Beaume, might be expelled as well after the yearly school party. During this party, Lemel, the alcoholic art teacher, dies after a fall when a power outage leaves the school in the black. Everyone believes in an accident but Beaume decides to investigate. He chooses to disappear as well and, with the help of the mysterious and spooky English teacher, he manages to discover the counterfeiting business at work in the school insides.

In New York City's Central Park, people begin committing mass suicide. Initially believed to be caused by a bio-terrorist attack using an airborne neurotoxin, the behavior quickly spreads across the northeastern United States. Elliot Moore, a high school science teacher in Philadelphia, hears about the attacks and decides to go to Harrisburg by train with his wife, Alma. They are accompanied by his friend Julian and Julian's eight-year-old daughter Jess. Julian's wife is stuck in Philadelphia but is expected to meet them in Harrisburg. The train loses all radio contact en route and stops at a small town. They receive word that Philadelphia has been attacked by the toxin and Julian's wife was not able to get on the train to Harrisburg. Julian decides to go look for her, leaving his daughter with the Moores while he hitches a ride. However, the town has already been hit by the toxin. Succumbing to it, the driver and Julian both commit suicide.
