Hamlet (Russian: Гамлет, Gamlet) is a 1964 film adaptation in Russian of William Shakespeare's play of the same title, based on a translation by Boris Pasternak. It was directed by Grigori Kozintsev and Iosif Shapiro, and stars Innokenty Smoktunovsky as Prince Hamlet.

Synopsis

La tragédie de William Shakespeare. Sur les remparts d'Elseneur, Hamlet voit apparaître le spectre de son père, ex roi du Danemark, qui lui révèle qu'il a été empoisonné pendant son sommeil par son frère Claudius avec la complicité de son épouse, la reine Gertrude. Le régicide lui a donc ravi sa femme, le trône et la vie. Afin de le venger, le jeune prince simule la folie et délaisse sa fiancée Ophélie. Au cours d'une explication avec sa mère, Hamlet croyant tuer l'usurpateur poignarde le chambellan Polonius. Sa fille, Ophélie devient folle et se suicide en se jetant dans une rivière. Laertes voulant venger son père provoque Hamlet en duel. Claudius pour être sûr de l'élimination de son neveu fournit une épée dont l'extrémité a trempé dans le poison au frère d'Ophélie. Au cours du combat les fleurets changent de main et Hamlet, bien que blessé, atteint Laertes, qui à l'agonie lui explique le plan machiavélique de son beau-père. Hamlet assassine Claudius tandis que sa mère meurt en buvant le breuvage empoisonné qui était réservé à son fils.

Serebryakov, a retired professor and his beautiful, much younger second wife, Yeléna, visit their country estate, which funds their urban lifestyle. Vanya, brother of the Professor's first wife, who manages the farm estate, and the local Doctor Astrov, both fall under Yelena's spell, while complaining of the endless ennui of their provincial existence. Astrov is an experienced physician who performs his job conscientiously, but has lost all idealism and spends much of his time drinking. En juillet 1942, lors de la seconde bataille de Kharkov les défenses soviétiques sont submergées par la contre-attaque allemande. Accompagnées de réfugiés civils, les troupes reculent vers Stalingrad. Parmi les combattants se trouvent le lieutenant Youri Kierżencew, son radiotéléphoniste Anton Valega et Ivan Sedykh, un éclaireur. Pour quelques jours, ils sont hébergés dans la maison d'un ouvrier d'usine des tracteurs de Stalingrad dont la nièce prénommée Lucia travaille dans un hôpital militaire. En compagnie de la jeune femme, le lieutenant Kierżencew fait une promenade le long de la Volga, ils passent près du kourgane Mamaïev. Lucia voit Kierżencew comme quelqu'un de renfermé, peu causant et pragmatique. Lui même avoue que ses centres d’intérêt se sont réduits aux éléments d'organisation militaire tellement que, même en regardant la Lune, il la considère strictement du point de vue stratégique.

The film, like the play, focuses on Rosencrantz and Guildenstern and their actions (or lack thereof) within the play of Hamlet. The film begins as they travel on horseback to Elsinore, contemplating fate, memory and language. Rosencrantz finds and continually flips a coin which always comes up heads, causing Guildenstern to conclude that something is wrong with reality. They meet a travelling troupe of tragedians on the way, and during their conversation with the lead Player, they are mysteriously transported into the action of Hamlet at Elsinore. They wander around the castle, trying to catch up to the action and understand what is going on by listening to other parts of the play. They are asked by the Danish royal couple to stay awhile in order to help find out the cause of, and hopefully cure, Prince Hamlet's gloomy state. They spend their time outside the scenes in Hamlet trying to figure out what is wrong with the prince and what is required of them.
