Vasanth (Vijay) is a son of a wealthy businessman and grows up with a possessive attitude. This is shown in one scene in a gift shop where he breaks a gift he likes solely because it had already been bought by someone else. He pays the owner to cover the damages, but he responds with a tagline - "If I can't get it, nobody can". He happens to visit Rajasthan, where he meets Priya (Kausalya) and falls in love immediately. Priya is injured in an accident and Vasanth's friend (Vasanth Kumar) rescues her by donating blood. Being unconscious, Priya doesn't know the face of her savior, only the name "Vasanth Kumar".

Shiva (Githan Ramesh) is the only son of a rich businessman (Avinash). He grows up surrounded by money and he is not cared for by his parents, due to his mother dying when he was a young boy and his father is business-minded and only cares about his money. Shiva and his friends are a playful bunch, they do not study and they mainly do lots of sport. Priya (Saloni), who also goes to the college (the college was created and run by Shiva's family) that Shiva goes to, is the daughter of a cow herder and a gangster Mayandi (Lal). Priya keeps her distance from Shiva, but as the film progresses it is inevitable that they become friends. Their friendship then develops into romance, but this love is opposed by both their parents. Both their parents try to separate them, they try to get them married of to different people. They eventually run away together, and a hit man is after Priya's life (hired by Shiva's father). In a confrontation with the hit-man Shiva gets wounded and defeats the hit-man, he then storms into his father's office and throws the hit-man at him. He then informs his father of his wedding in front of the district court. His father turns up with a large battalion of police officers, while Shiva turns up with a much large number of students. The film ends with their wedding successfully happening, and Mayandi gives his blessings.

On his wedding day, Shiva (Vijay) discovers that his cousin and bride, Aruna, has run away because she does not want to marry a cook. But he takes it lightly and moves to Chennai with the girl's brother (Shyam Ganesh) to look for a job. One night, he saves Sandya from some goons. In gratitude, she kisses him. Shiva starts to fall in love with Sandya. After several occasions where they bumped into each other, Shiva harbours hope that she too reciprocates his affections.

Priya breaks the affair with Surya after she gets a proposal from a rich man Ajay. Surya by accident becomes invisible. He hits Ajay and advises Priya to give up Ajay. As he is invisible and others can only hear his voice, he tells them that he is God. Taking the advantage of invisibility, he loots a bank. A kind-hearted Zamindar (Rajinikanth) lived with his sister-in-law and cousin Rajasekhar (Raghuvaran), helping people incessantly. His sister-in-law has a son, to whom the Zamindar bequeaths a major portion of his property. At this juncture, a new baby is born to the Zamindar. His wife dies soon after. Brother Rajasekhar cheats the Zamindar as he fears that his son's property might be taken back and given to the Zamindar's own son. When the cheating comes to light, the Zamindar hands over all his property and his baby to his sister-in-law and brother and goes to the Himalayas, making his sister-in-law promise him that the baby should be brought up as a servant, not as a Zamindar. This baby is named Muthu (also Rajinikanth).
