In France, it was released as Monsieur Ripois (the title of the original novel by Louis Hémon). In the United States, it was originally released as Lovers, Happy Lovers!, then later re-released as Lover Boy. The film, which was a French-British co-production, stars Gérard Philipe in the title role, and was directed by René Clément.
The film was entered into the 1954 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Prize.
Synopsis
André Ripois, un Français exilé à Londres, est un Don Juan. Sa femme Catherine, lasse de ses infidélités, part pour Édimbourg pour préparer son divorce. Pendant ce temps, André, entre plusieurs liaisons opportunistes, s'éprend de Patricia, une amie de sa femme, et utilise pour la séduire de nombreux stratagèmes.Actors

The story is set in Rome, in the year 1921. Ulysses (Alain Delon) enrolls in the Italian Fascist party because he cannot find any employment. The American Tom Ripley (Delon) has been sent to Italy to persuade his wealthy friend, Philippe Greenleaf (Maurice Ronet), to return to the United States and take over his father's business. Philippe intends to do no such thing and the impoverished Tom enjoys living a life of luxury, so the two men essentially spend money all day and carouse all night. Tom is fixated on Philippe and his girlfriend Marge (Marie Laforêt) and covets the other man's life. Philippe eventually grows bored with his friend's fawning and becomes cruel and abusive to him. The final straw is when, during a yachting trip, Philippe strands Tom in the dinghy and leaves him to lie in the sun for hours.

As Germany is in the throes of losing World War II, a number of wealthy Nazis and some French sympathizers head for South America in a German submarine leaving from Oslo.
