Synopsis
Maryline a grandi dans un petit village. Ses parents ne recevaient jamais personne et vivaient les volets clos. À 20 ans, elle "monte à Paris" pour devenir comédienne. Mais, elle n'a pas les mots pour se défendre. Elle est confrontée à tout ce que ce métier et le monde peuvent avoir d'humiliant mais aussi de bienveillant. In a theatre, Guillaume recounts how his life developed as a youth. As a young effeminate boy, his mother casually dismisses his antics. When he asks to go learn Spanish, his mother sends him to La Línea de la Concepción. There he stays with Paqui, a Spanish woman unable to speak French. As they awkwardly try to communicate, she suggests teaching him how to dance the sevillanas. Becoming proficient, Guillaume dances at a local festival but is subjected to laughter. Oblivious to why, he asks a woman named Pilar to dance with him. She politely refuses, explaining to him how he dances like a girl. He asks her if she thinks he looks like a girl. She agrees and he happily remarks that his mother would be delighted.

The film cuts between two seemingly unrelated stories. One, set in present-day Montreal, stars Kevin Parent as Antoine, a successful club DJ torn between his new girlfriend Rose (Évelyne Brochu) and his still-complicated relationship with his ex-wife Carole (Hélène Florent); the other, set in 1960s Paris, stars Vanessa Paradis as Jacqueline, the fiercely protective single mother of Laurent (Marin Gerrier), a child with Down syndrome who has a crush on Véro (Alice Dubois), a friend and companion who also has Down syndrome. Ben Sanderson (Cage) is a Hollywood screenwriter whose alcoholism costs him his job, family, and friends. With nothing left to live for, he moves to Las Vegas to drink himself to death.
