Two close and very wealthy friends, Vijay and Pranlal, decide to cement their friendship to a relationship when Vijay proposes marriage on behalf of his sister, Shobha, with Pranlal's son, Amar. Pranlal agrees, and preparations are on for the marriage to take place. Vijay finds out that Pranlal and his men are using their business as a front for drugs and smuggling, and he decides to cancel the wedding. Pranlal is angry with Vijay, but refuses to give up his criminal career. When Amar finds out about his dad's spurious activities, he kills himself. Pranlal, humiliated and angered, vows to avenge Amar's death, and wants Shobha to be Amar's widow for the rest of her life, which is not acceptable to Vijay. Then Shobha meets with a handsome stranger named Jackie, who rescues her. She offers him employment with her brother's firm, and they fall in love with each other. When Vijay finds out he is upset that his sister has chosen a mere employee for a life-partner, and decides to oppose this marriage at all costs. But both Shobha and Jackie are adamant, and refuse to budge, and finally Vijay gives in, and soon both are married. After the marriage, Jackie starts to show his true colors, and becomes very abusive. Shobha then finds out the terrible truth behind Jackie's hatred, a truth that will change her and Vijay's lives forever.

Ravi arrests Chandi Das and his gang red - handedly with the help of Sonu and sends them 6 years of imprisonment. Sonu lover Radha (Anita Raj) & Ravi’s lover Geetha (Madhavi) they marry them on the same day, both of them blessed with male children on same day and they all live very happily for 6 years. After 6 years Chandi Das & his gang releases from jail and they want take revenge against Ravi & Sonu. One day Ravi is appointed on a special duty to safe-guard valuable antic jewelers, Chandi Das want to acquire those jewelers so he kidnaps Ravi & Sonu’s children and asks Ravi to get that Jewelers but Ravi doesn’t surrender to them so they will kill Sonu’s child as warning, Radha also dies seeing the death of her child. Sonu becomes a fire and want to take revenge against Chandi Das & his gang even though Ravi tries to stop him but Sonu doesn't listen to him, because he lot everything in the life, he starts killing Chandi Das gangsters one by one. There Ravi makes a plan to catch them he agrees to give the jewellers to Chandi Das but they keep him in their custody at the same time Sonu saves him, Ravi and Sonu both joins together sees end of Chandi Das but Sonu sacrifices his life to protect Ravi’s child.

The plot is an intricately woven one. It starts from childhood with the story of Ashok (also called Shoki by his childhood friend Vinod) (Dharmendra) who is a wealthy industrialist's only son. He is passionate about cars from childhood befriends Vinod (Vinod Khanna) who is passionate about trains; its his dream to make India's fastest train. Rakesh (Vinod Mehra) shares same passion as Vinod. Randhir (Danny Denzongpa) is in a tussle from childhood to make a better train than Vinod's. Childhood turns into adulthood and one day both attend a dance function organised by the Indian Railways. This is where Ashok and Vinod fall in love with two beautiful women: Seema (Hema Malini) and Sheetal (Parveen Babi). Ashok is now deeply in love with Seema and they are planning to get married after their engagement. Vinod is married to Sheetal and they have a son Raju. One day Vinod, who is now a top notch railway engineer, gets awarded with the contract to build a super-fast express train between New Delhi and Mumbai. Rakesh (Vinod Mehra) is his assistant. Randhir, the losing engineer and ex-lover of Sheetal, swears revenge and leaves.

Ramniklal was a NRI living in Uganda with his son Vijay (Dharmendra) and daughter Radha (Aruna Irani). They are planning to move back to India because of a civil war in the country. The night they were about to move, their home is attacked by rebels and set on fire. Vijay jumps in the fire to save his sister. He carries a woman out, but she turns out to be the housemaid in his sister's clothes (Radha asked the maid to choose the clothes she liked before she left and the maid asked her for the clothes she was wearing). Vijay's father dies from the trauma of losing his daughter. Vijay too believes that Champa burned with the house, but when no body is found he feels that there is something fishy. Nevertheless, he leaves for India alone as the country is embroiled in civil war.
