The Long Winter (French title: Quand je serai parti... vous vivrez encore) is a 1999 Quebec historical drama film. Directed by Michel Brault, it is a partly fictionalized account of the Lower Canada Rebellion of 1837 and 1838 which sought to make Lower Canada, now Quebec, a republic independent from the British Empire.
Synopsis
Le film se déroule en 1838, en plein coeur du conflit entre les habitants français du Bas-Canada et les occupants anglais. À l'automne de la même année, François-Xavier Bouchard et plusieurs de ses compatriotes sont capturés. Jugés par un tribunal militaire, 12 patriotes sont pendus devant la porte de la prison, sous les yeux horrifiés de leurs compagnons. Pendant plusieurs mois, des dizaines d'autres patriotes, eux aussi condamnés à mort, attendent dans l'angoisse une exécution qui ne viendra jamais. Le film est inspiré des journaux authentiques de ceux qui vécurent ces évenements.Actors

Claude (Claude Gauthier) leaves his small town on the Côte-Nord to go to Montreal, where he works several odd jobs and eventually falls in love with Geneviève (Geneviève Bujold), a pretty waitress who works in a local diner. Claude enters a singing contest that launches his career. As he gradually becomes more well known, he has a brief affair with a married woman and breaks up with Geneviève. He returns to his hometown but nothing seems the same. Back in Montreal, he becomes increasingly more successful as a singer. One night he meets Geneviève backstage, only to learn she is now married, and realizes one can be as lonely in a small town as in a big city.

A young nurse named Suzanne is kidnapped, assaulted and brutally raped in the back of a truck by a woman-hating stranger. The nurse's rape and the aftermath are part of a film which a director and her editor are working on. From time to time they pause the film to discuss their intentions and reactions to the film they are making. The film begins in 1943 at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, with newly commissioned Lt. Michael Grayson (Johnson) reporting for duty with the 442nd, then in training. He discovers that he has been sent to a unit composed of Nisei; he had expected to return to the U.S. 36th Infantry Division, a Texas National Guard unit with which he had served as an enlisted man. Having joined the war to fight against the Japanese, he is disturbed to find he is expected to fight alongside people whom he sees as Japanese, rather than Americans. The humane Captain Crawford (Guinness) is in command of the warship HMS Defiant during the French Revolutionary Wars. He soon finds himself in a battle of wills with his first officer, the sadistic and supercilious first lieutenant, Mr. Scott-Padget (Bogarde). The Lieutenant believes that Crawford is too soft on his crew, and also disagrees with the captain's decision to proceed with orders to sail to Corsica despite word that Napoleon has overrun much of Italy. Scott-Padget has powerful family connections, which he has used in the past to "beach" two previous commanding officers with whom he disagreed. Knowing that Crawford is helpless to intervene, Scott-Padget subjects the former's son, Midshipman Harvey Crawford (David Robinson), to excessive daily punishments so as to gain leverage over the captain.
