The Savage is a 1952 Western film directed by George Marshall and starring Charlton Heston. Much of the film was shot in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Synopsis

Quelques années après la fin de la guerre de Sécession. Un convoi en route vers l'Ouest traversant le territoire Sioux est attaqué par un groupe de Crows. Le convoi est massacré et seul le jeune Jim Ahern survit. Il est recueilli et élevé chez les Sioux, auprès du chef Geronimo qui le considère comme son fils. Mais la guerre contre les Blancs approche et, lors d'un conseil, Jim dit Cœur vaillant est envoyé au fort pour espionner les soldats. Cœur vaillant va devoir choisir entre son peuple d'origine et son peuple d'adoption.

Two Confederate veterans broke and homeless are making their way to Texas to start fresh. After comedic adventures getting into and out of trouble just trying to make enough move to get to Texas, they witness a stagecoach robbery and manage to hold up the outlaws and take back the cash. At that point they have a difference of opinion; the 'good' one Todd Ramsey (Glenn Ford) wants to give it back, the 'bad' one Dan Thomas (William Holden as a fresh 1941 face) wants to keep it and keep going...but goodness wins out, and both are off the hook. The honest one takes a job with the biggest local rancher (who of course has a beautiful and friendly daughter) and the 'bad one stumbles into a different kind of job—with another rancher who specializes in rustling. They both have heads turned by the lovely lady and the battle of good and evil continues in often comedic circumstances...although a showdown looms. The key to the action is the need to get the entire town/valley's cattle past all the rustlers up to the railroad at Abilene. Many twists and turns in this complicated, comedic and top-notch Western with blockbuster ending that cuts back to core of all good westerns...good men tested by difficult circumstances.

Saloon owner Kent (Brian Donlevy), the unscrupulous boss of the fictional Western town of Bottleneck, has the town's Sheriff, Keogh, killed when the Sheriff asks one too many questions about a rigged poker game. In 1864, during the American Civil War, Texan Lt. Frank Hewitt (Audie Murphy) is serving with the U.S. Cavalry under Colonel John Chivington. On patrol, Hewitt meets a group of Indians who are unarmed and returning to the Sand Creek reservation which they were not supposed to leave. While being briefed by Hewitt, the colonel orders the attack known to history as the Sand Creek Massacre. Hewitt not only disagrees with the punishment of the Indians, but realizes they will use the attack as an excuse to unite and spread terror throughout the Southwest, including his own hometown in Texas which has been emptied of the majority of its men who are fighting for the Confederacy. Colonel Chivington sees Indian attacks on Texas as a bonus to create havoc in the Confederacy. Violently objecting, Hewitt is placed under arrest and confined to quarters.
