Synopsis
Originaire de Savannah, Clara dirige un important cabinet d'avocats à Atlanta. De retour dans sa ville natale pour enterrer sa mère Mattie, célèbre conteuse de la région, elle est accueillie par Wallis, son amie d'enfance, et le père de celle-ci. Après les funérailles, les Brooks, un couple de voisins, évoquent l'une des histoires de Mattie, celle de l'arbre à souhaits qui raconte comment une jeune esclave noire échappa jadis à son maître et à sa condition, grâce au voeu exaucé par un arbre auprès duquel elle avait trouvé refuge. Dès le lendemain, Jamie, le fils de Wallis, et son amie Alexa, captivés par le récit, partent à la recherche de l'arbre magique.Actors

The film follows Jay Jay (Segal), a former hair dresser who has become a drug addict. He lives his new life by doing deals for Vivian (Elizondo) from time to time. One rainy night, Richard Bone's (Bridges) car breaks down in an alleyway. He spots a large, mysterious car in the distance. A man dumps something into a garbage can. At first, Bone thinks nothing of it and proceeds to meet his friend, Alex Cutter (Heard). The next day, a young girl is found brutally murdered in the same alleyway where Bone abandoned his car. Dr. Harry Wolper is an eccentric medical professor teaching at a small southern California college who is obsessed with making a clone of his wife Lucy who died in childbirth 30 years earlier. Harry hires Boris Lafkin, a struggling pre-med student as his personal assistant to help him with his experiments by obtaining lab equipment and working in his backyard shed in exchange for which Harry gives Boris love life advice in courting an attractive coed named Barbara whom slowly becomes smitten with Boris. To continue his research into cloning, Harry meets and employes a young woman, named Meli, who practically moves in with him on an agreement to contribute her ovary sample as part of the cloning progress. Allan Breck Stewart (Armand Assante) returns to his home village, which is already menaced by the highland clearances. Financial wizard "Doc" Fletcher (Michael Caine) persuades his boss, American mobster Joe Fiore (Martin Balsam), to buy up a Swiss bank in order to more easily launder their ill-gotten gains.
