Underwater Dreams is a documentary film written, directed, and produced by Mary Mazzio, chronicles the story of how the sons of undocumented Mexican immigrants learned how to build underwater robots, and go up against MIT in the process.

Synopsis

Underwater Dreams is the true story of a team of undocumented Mexican high school students, who under the tutelage of two of their teachers, enter the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center's annual International ROV competition. which is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Marine Technology Society, NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and NASA. The four boys from Carl Hayden High School in Phoenix competed against college teams all across the United States including MIT.

The film begins by studying the Zero Tolerance policies in public schools in the 1990s, which were designed to eradicate drugs and weapons at schools. By arbitrary application of this policy via unchecked authority, soon nail clippers, key chains, and aspirin were considered dangerous and violations of the rules. This policy, combined with Columbine-inspired fear, has resulted in kindergartners being suspended for using pointed fingers as guns in games of cops and robbers and students being suspended for having Midol and Alka-Seltzer. Increasingly, issues once dealt with by the guidance counselor or a trip to the principal’s office are now handled by the police.

Kenya, 2003: A radio DJ announces that the Kenyan government is offering free primary school education to all. The film opens with the a title card and the sound of Carlos Santana's guitar solo from the song "Black Magic Woman". Paul Green, the primary subject of the film introduces the evening's concert. The camera pans to reveals that the guitarist is twelve-year-old C.J. Tywoniak. The School is then introduced, with Green re-enacting a scene from the film The Silence of the Lambs as Jame Gumb for a group of students. This is followed by the first of a number of interview segments with Green throughout the film. He explains why he started a performance-based program. 9 year old twin boys Asa and Tucker Collins are interviewed, followed by an interview with Tywoniak and his parents about his future in music, teenage girl Madi Diaz-Svalgard, a Quaker singer/songwriter who frequently clashes with Green and finally Will O'Conner a less-successful student who credits the School with saving his life. These students are followed closely through the rest of the film.
