Angleterre, 1673. John Reid écrit ses mémoires : Lors de la révolution anglaise, il a onze ans lorsque les Doone, seigneurs d'Exeter pour lesquels travaille son père métayer, se voient confisquer leurs terres par le nouveau roi Charles II, à la suite de la mort de Cromwell, qu'ils soutenaient lors du conflit. Les Reid et tous les fermiers de la région se réjouissent de ces sanctions car les Doone sont cruels ; ils refusent désormais de continuer à leur payer des impôts. Les Doone ne l'entendent pas de cette oreille, et tuent le père de John Reid. L'enfant jure de se venger, et le fait savoir aux fils Doone et à leur cousine, Lorna (enfants tout comme lui) quand il les rencontre pour la première fois. Devenu adulte, John Reid, outré par les lourdes taxes sur les cultures imposés par les Doone, prend la tête d'une révolte.

This romance is set in Tyrol, western Austria. Previously filmed in 1928, the sentimental Margaret Kennedy novel The Constant Nymph was sumptuously remade by Gaumont-British Picture Corporation in 1933. Victoria Hopper plays the title character, a rich, Belgian gamine named Tessa Sanger. The girl falls hopelessly in love with world-famous composer Lewis Dodd (Brian Aherne), who is so full of himself that he barely acknowledges Tessa's existence. As she looks on in quiet desperation, Dodd marries another woman, his distant cousin Florence (Leonora Corbett). It takes him nearly the entire picture to realize what a fool he's been, and that Tessa was the one girl for him all along—but alas, it's too late. The Constant Nymph was remade by Warner Bros. in 1943, at which time all prints of the 1933 version were supposed to be destroyed, however, several prints did survive.

Riccardo Broschi décide de faire castrer son petit frère Carlo, futur Farinelli, en maquillant cela sous la forme d'un « accident », afin qu'il puisse conserver cette voix cristalline sensationnelle sans laquelle la musique de Riccardo, qui est compositeur, ne vaudrait rien. Le jeune homme parcourt les opéras avec son frère. Une jeune femme, Alexandra, vient un jour demander aux frères Broschi de donner une représentation dans un petit théâtre anglais en pleine faillite. Ils acceptent. C'est alors que s'engage la concurrence entre les Broschi qui veulent sauver le théâtre et Haendel, l'ancien maître des deux frères et célèbre compositeur. Le théâtre gagne considérablement en popularité, mais Haendel tente par tous les moyens de récupérer la voix exceptionnelle de Farinelli. Haendel fait une allusion à « l'accident » qui a coûté sa virilité à Farinelli. Ce dernier découvre alors la vérité et la relation privilégiée qu'il avait avec Riccardo s'efface. Farinelli et Alexandra sont amoureux. Riccardo, qui cherche à se faire pardonner et à rendre une vie « normale » à son petit frère, fait un enfant à Alexandra, puis part s'engager dans l'armée. Il disparaît de la vie de Farinelli, que l'on voit, dans l'une des dernières scènes du film, embrasser le ventre arrondi par la grossesse d’Alexandra.

En 1777, après une dispute avec le Prince-archevêque de Salzbourg Hieronymus von Colloredo-Mannsfeld, Mozart part avec sa mère pour Paris. Pendant le voyage, il persuade sa mère de s'arrêter à Mannheim pour voir Aloysia Weber dont il est amoureux. Après avoir chanté une chanson composée par Mozart, elle a obtenu un emploi à la cour royale. À contrecœur Mozart se rend à Paris. Mais en France, il ne retrouve pas le succès qu'il a connu comme enfant prodige. De plus, sa mère meurt à Paris. Il retourne donc à Salzbourg.
