Yokai Monsters: Spook Warfare (Japanese: 妖怪大戦争 Hepburn Yōkai Daisensō, lit. "The Great Yōkai War") is a 1968 Japanese horror/fantasy film directed by Kuroda Yoshiyuki. It is the second in a trilogy of films produced in the late 1960s, all of which focus around traditional Japanese monsters known as Yōkai.

There were originally three movies made:

Yokai Monsters: One Hundred Monsters (1968) released in March
Yokai Monsters: Spook Warfare (1968) released in December
Yokai Monsters: Along With Ghosts (1969) released in March
The films were produced by Daiei Motion Picture Company, and make extensive use of tokusatsu special effects, with the majority of the creatures being represented by actors in costumes or puppets.

In 2005, director Takashi Miike released The Great Yokai War, a modern retelling of the story which borrows many elements from Spook Warfare.

Synopsis

The film opens in the ruins of the Babylonian city of Ur, with a narration detailing a local legend pertaining to a great monster known as Daimon, who lays dormant in the rubble of the city. Four thousand years later, the ruins are disturbed by treasure hunters, and the monster Daimon (Chikara Hashimoto) is roused and proceeds to kill the intruders by causing a landslide. Following his release, Daimon decides to fly directly to Japan. There, he encounters a Samurai known as Lord Hyogo Isobe (Takashi Kanda), whom he kills and whose blood he consumes. Following this vampiric act, Daimon assumes the form of Isobe and makes his way to the Lord's house. There he is met by Isobe's daughter, Lady Chie (Akane Kawasaki), and fellow Samurai Shinpachiro Mayama (Yoshihiko Aoyama). After killing the family dog for barking at him, Daimon proceeds to tear down all altars in the house and orders his servants to have them burned. In his frenzy, he throws out an ornament which falls into a pond outside, rousing a Kappa (Gen Kuroki). The Kappa decides to investigate the ruckus and happens to see Daimon (as Isobe) drinking the blood of Isobe's steward, Saheiji Kawano (Gen Kimura). When Saheiji also displays Daimon's mannerisms and orders the altars burned, the Kappa becomes suspicious and attacks Daimon fruitlessly. Defeated and hurt, the Kappa goes to the woods to seek out other Yōkai to help him fight back Daimon. The forest is home to the one-legged Kasa-obake, the frightening Futakuchi-onna (Keiko Yukitomo), the long-necked Rokurokubi (Ikuko Mori), the clay monster Nuppeppō, and the wise Abura-sumashi. The Yōkai don't believe the Kappa's story, as they insist such a monster has never been found in Japan.

Michael Baskin is an average 11-year-old boy. His father, Billy Baskin, is a struggling artist and temporary sole caregiver of the children while his wife attends to the needs of her recently deceased father in Australia. Upon hearing the news that an abandoned mansion has recently burned down, Michael and his friend Connie decide to explore the remains. Outside the mansion, Connie dares Michael to take a look inside, leading to a frightening encounter with the ghosts of its homeless inhabitants who had died in the fire. Michael does not know this yet, but his fearsome run in with the ghosts has given him a mysterious illness simply known as "The Fright". Michael wakes up the next morning to find out that "The Fright" has made him lose all of his hair. After a failed attempt with a wig (his wig was pulled off by an older boy during a fight in a soccer game), the ghosts visit Michael in his sleep and give him the recipe of a magical formula for hair growth, the main ingredient of which is peanut butter. Michael's first attempt to make the formula is thwarted when his father and sister think he is making something to ingest (rather than use topically) and dispose of it.

A snow storm comes up, and Amy seeks shelter in the Farrens' house. Barbara, mad and jealous at her mother's preference for Amy over her, intends to strangle the girl. The modern-day descendant of Little Red Riding Hood, Virginia, brings her fiance, Nathan, home to meet her family. Virginia's brother Marcus and Jake are quick to welcome Virginia back, affectionately calling her "Red". Jake explains it is a family nickname passed down to the first daughter every generation. After the arrival of both people, Nathan finds a man staggering up the driveway half dead. The dying man says the name "Gabriel" before Nathan runs for Virginia. When they return, the man is already ashes. The sheriff arrives and contains the situation, much to Nathan's dismay. Virginia takes Nathan inside and explains that they hunt werewolves. Nathan, not believing her, goes for a walk at sunset. He is attacked and bitten by a werewolf who reveals his name to be Gabriel. The next day, while preparing for a hunt, Nathan asks if they had ever turned a werewolf back. Virginia tells him that the only way to break the curse is to kill the wolf who turned the person, before they kill a human on their first full moon. Shortly after, they go hunting in town where Nathan succeeds in killing a werewolf. After the wolves are dead, they find a girl locked in their trunk. She tells them that the wolves are planning on a "Game" that no human comes out of. Later that night, while setting up camp, Nathan transforms into a wolf for the first time. Desperate to protect him, Virginia insists on locking him up for the night. Nathan awakes the next morning in a cell. With the curse over for the night, he is released for the day, to help hunt Gabriel. Back in town, Marcus and Jake are taken captive for the new "Game". When the night comes to an end, it is revealed that the brothers were killed.
