A kidnapping goes down in 1934 Kansas City. Blondie O'Hara's petty thief husband Johnny is taken by gangster "Seldom Seen" and held prisoner at the Hey Hey Club, one of the hot spots of the Kansas City jazz scene. Blondie herself kidnaps Mrs. Stilton, the wife of a local politician, played by Michael Murphy; Mrs. Stilton is addicted to laudanum (an opium liquid) and has secrets of her own. Blondie's plan is to blackmail Mr. Stilton into helping to free Johnny.

The Cry of Jazz is set in Chicago at the meeting of a jazz appreciation club of musicians and intellectuals, both Black and White. It is broken up into seven parts. Parts one, three, five, and seven center around conversations between the jazz club members. Parts two, four, and six are done in a documentary style and utilize footage of life in Chicago as well as of Sun Ra’s band performing the music. Alex, the film’s main character, serves as narrator during these sections. Although the film is nominally about jazz, jazz is utilized primaily as a metaphor through which to understand the African American experience.

Le frère de Hugues, chef d'orchestre de la formation wallonne, refuse la partition écrite par son frère pour la finale. Frustré, Hugues passe dans le camp adverse où son charme fait des ravages, au point de séduire Elke, pourtant en instance de mariage avec Renaat le fils du sponsor de l'orchestre. Hugues propose sa partition à son nouvel orchestre, qui n'y montre aucun enthousiasme.

Soon an unseen band takes over the accompaniment and Mickey joins Minnie; the two mice dance and scat sing two more verses.
