Biography
Né en Iowa en 2233, James Tiberius Kirk, second fils de George et de Winona Kirk, doit ses deux prénoms à ceux de ses grand-pères. Élevé en partie sur la colonie de Tarsus IV, il assiste à l'assassinat de plusieurs membres de sa famille lors d'un génocide planétaire (voir La Conscience du roi).En 2250, Kirk intègre l'Académie de Starfleet et effectue son année de classes en tant que cadet sur le vaisseau. Il triche au test du Kobayashi Maru en reprogrammant la simulation, en prétextant qu'il ne croit pas aux scénarios sans espoir.
En 2254, il obtient son diplôme d'officier puis est transféré sur le Farragut à bord duquel il sert durant trois ans.
En 2261, le docteur Carol Marcus lui donne un fils David mais Kirk ne l'apprendra qu'en 2285.
Après neuf ans de services exemplaires, il est promu capitaine en 2263, le plus jeune de l'histoire de Starfleet, et succède au capitaine Christopher Pike à la tête de l'USS Enterprise pour cinq années de missions, de 2264 à 2269, qui construisent sa légende.
Il est élevé au rang d'amiral en 2270, ce qui implique de ne plus être en mission aux commandes d'un vaisseau, mais, devant la menace que représente l'entité V'Ger, il retrouve, en violation de tous les règlements, les commandes de l'Enterprise, écartant par la suite le capitaine Will Decker qu'il avait préconisé pour son remplacement. Il attaque ainsi une nouvelle mission de cinq ans.
Réinstallé dans ses fonctions d'amiral, il enseigne à l'Académie de Starfleet, et ce jusqu'en 2285 lorsque la réapparition de Khan Noonien Singh le force à reprendre du service actif, mission au cours de laquelle il perd Spock, son ami et second. Il s'empare ensuite de l'Enterprise, destiné à être désarmé, à destination de Genesis où se trouve le corps de Spock pour ramener son ami sur Vulcain afin de pouvoir pratiquer le « fal tor pan » qui rendra son esprit à Spock. Kirk sacrifiera son vaisseau et perdra aussi son fils David ; celui-ci donnera sa vie pour sauver un Spock adolescent et le lieutenant Saavik dont il était tombé amoureux. Rétrogradé à la suite de cet acte d'insubordination, il retrouve ainsi le rang de capitaine ce qui l'autorise, en 2286, à prendre les rênes d'un vaisseau, l'Enterprise-A.
Après avoir permis la concrétisation des accords de Khitomer, il partira en retraite une seconde fois puis sera invité, en 2293, à la cérémonie de lancement de l’Enterprise-B, évènement au cours duquel on assiste à sa disparition. Il est, en fait, happé par le Nexus, une anomalie temporelle.
En 2371, le capitaine Picard le croise dans le Nexus et se rend compte que seul Kirk peut l'aider. Kirk et Picard parviendront à sauver les habitants du système Véridien mais il y laissera la vie, tué par le docteur Soran. James T. Kirk est inhumé sur Véridian III. Peu après, Spock, prévenu par le capitaine Jean-Luc Picard, utilisera un vaisseau cargo, pour amener le corps de Kirk sur Terre et le téléporter dans la tombe qui a été érigée pour lui.

2263. Sur une planète, le capitaine James T. Kirk agit à titre d'ambassadeur pour conclure un traité de paix entre deux peuples ennemis. En guise de cadeau, il apporte un artéfact qui faisait partie d'une puissante arme inconnue. Cependant, le chef de la planète s'emporte, croyant qu'on veut se moquer de lui et soumettre son peuple. Kirk tente de l'apaiser, mais le chef préfère attaquer Kirk, imité par ses congénères. Grâce à Scotty, Kirk retourne sur le vaisseau USS Enterprise. Après cette mission manquée, Kirk se questionne sur son rôle dans Starfleet. Après trois ans de mission et alors que son anniversaire approche — il aura un an de plus que son père quand il est mort —, il n'éprouve plus qu'ennui et malaise, même si son équipage est l'un des meilleurs selon ses dires.

Four years after Kirk's promotion in 2259, the starship USS Enterprise studies a primitive culture on the planet Nibiru. Captain James T. Kirk and his First Officer, Commander Spock, save the planet's inhabitants from an extinction-threatening volcanic eruption, but Kirk violates the Prime Directive, exposing the Enterprise to the native inhabitants to save Spock's life. Returning to Earth, Kirk loses command of the Enterprise and Admiral Christopher Pike is reinstated as its commanding officer with Kirk demoted to first officer and the rank of Commander. For his part in the incident, Spock is reassigned to another ship. An officers' meeting is called to discuss the bombing of a Section 31 installation in London perpetrated by the renegade Starfleet operative John Harrison (Cumberbatch). Harrison attacks the meeting in a jumpship, killing Pike. Kirk disables the jumpship, but Harrison uses a portable transporter to escape to Kronos, the homeworld of hostile aliens known as Klingons.

In the 23rd century, the Federation starship USS Kelvin is investigating a "lightning storm" in space. A Romulan ship, the Narada, emerges from the storm and attacks the Kelvin. Narada 's first officer, Ayel, demands that the Kelvin 's Captain Robau come aboard to negotiate a truce. Once aboard, Robau is questioned about the current stardate and an "Ambassador Spock", whom he professes not to know. Narada 's commander, Nero, kills him, and continues his attack on the Kelvin. George Kirk, the Kelvin 's first officer, orders the ship's personnel, including his pregnant wife Winona, to evacuate the ship while he pilots the Kelvin on a collision course with the Narada, as the auto-pilot function has been damaged. At the cost of his life, Kirk ensures Winona's survival as she gives birth to James T.

In the year 2293, retired Captain James T. Kirk, Montgomery Scott, and Pavel Chekov attend the maiden voyage of the Federation starship USS Enterprise-B, under the command of the unseasoned Capt. John Harriman. During the voyage, Enterprise is pressed into a rescue mission to save two El-Aurian ships from a strange energy ribbon. Enterprise is able to save some of the refugees before their ships are destroyed, but the starship becomes trapped in the ribbon. Kirk goes to deflector control to alter the deflector dish, allowing Enterprise to escape, but the trailing end of the ribbon rakes across Enterprise 's hull, exposing the section Kirk is in to space; he is presumed dead.

Upon discovering a UFO in American airspace, the National Guard sends fighter jets to investigate, and they fire on the craft when it doesn't respond. Belatedly activating a cloaking device too late, the spaceship crashes into the Atlantic ocean, near land. The aliens aboard, Beldar Clorhone and his life-mate Prymaat, survive and quickly adapt to our human way of life, despite standing out with their conical shaped heads. Beldar gets work as an appliance repairman, and when his grateful boss Otto discovers that Beldar has no documentation, he arranges for a false identity, which sends up a red flag that quickly alerts the INS. Meanwhile, after communicating with their world (Remulak) and discovering that a rescue vessel will not arrive for seven "Zurls" (many years), Prymaat informs Beldar that she is pregnant. They now need to completely adapt and safely blend in in order to raise their child among humans. Ambitious INS agent Gorman Seedling and his assistant Eli attempt to capture Beldar and Prymaat, but they are able to elude the two agents.

As a Klingon moon, Praxis, explodes without warning, the starship USS Excelsior, commanded by Captain Hikaru Sulu, is struck by the shock wave and its crew discovers that much of the moon has been obliterated. The loss of their key energy production facility and the destruction of the Klingon homeworld's ozone layer throws the Klingon Empire into turmoil. No longer able to maintain a hostile footing, the Klingons sue for peace with their longstanding enemy, the United Federation of Planets. Accepting the proposal before the Klingons revert to a more belligerent approach, Starfleet sends the USS Enterprise-A to meet with the Klingon Chancellor, Gorkon, and escort him to negotiations on Earth. Enterprise 's captain, James T. Kirk, whose son David was murdered by Klingons years earlier, opposes the negotiations and resents his assignment.

The crew of the newly commissioned USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A) are enjoying shore leave after the starship's shakedown cruise goes poorly. At Yosemite National Park, Captain James T. Kirk is camping with Spock and Dr. Leonard McCoy. Their leave is interrupted when the Enterprise is ordered by Starfleet Command to rescue human, Klingon, and Romulan hostages on the planet Nimbus III. In 2286, a large cylindrical probe moves through space, sending out an indecipherable signal and disabling the power of ships it passes. As it takes up orbit around Earth, its signal disables the global power grid and generates planetary storms, creating catastrophic, sun-blocking cloud cover. Starfleet Command sends out a planetary distress call and warns starships not to approach Earth.

The Federation Starship Enterprise returns to Earth following a battle with the superhuman Khan Noonien Singh, who tried to destroy the Enterprise by detonating an experimental terraforming device known as Genesis. The casualties of the fight include Admiral James T. Kirk's Vulcan friend, Spock, whose casket was launched into space and eventually landed on the planet created by the Genesis Device. On arriving at Earth Spacedock, Doctor Leonard McCoy begins to act strangely and is detained. Starfleet Admiral Morrow visits the Enterprise and informs the crew the ship is to be decommissioned; the crew is ordered not to speak about Genesis due to political fallout over the device.

In the year 2285, Admiral James T. Kirk oversees a simulator session of Captain Spock's trainees. In the simulation, Lieutenant Saavik commands the starship USS Enterprise on a rescue mission to save the crew of a damaged ship. When the Enterprise enters the Klingon Neutral Zone to reach the ship it is attacked by Klingon cruisers and critically damaged. The simulation is named the "Kobayashi Maru"—a no-win scenario designed to test the character of Starfleet officers. Later, Dr. McCoy joins Kirk on his birthday; seeing Kirk in low spirits, the doctor advises Kirk to get a new command and not grow old behind a desk.

In 2273, a Starfleet monitoring station, Epsilon Nine, detects an alien force, hidden in a massive cloud of energy, moving through space towards Earth. The cloud destroys three of the Klingon Empire's new K't'inga-class warships and the monitoring station en route. On Earth, the starship Enterprise is undergoing a major refit; her former commanding officer, James T. Kirk, has been promoted to Admiral and works in San Francisco as Chief of Starfleet Operations. Starfleet dispatches Enterprise to investigate the cloud entity as the ship is the only one in intercept range, requiring her new systems to be tested in transit.
