The movie begins with Harry (Pryce), an up-and-coming actor, and his wife Buffy (Davis) on their "second honeymoon". After staying overnight at a motel, the owner (Black) informs Harry of previous nuclear testing taking place in the town. The following day, their Bentley car eventually breaks down, leading them to run out of water in the middle of the desert. Harry has the idea to stay put with their car rather than to look for help. While Harry sleeps in the back seat, Buffy notices a light in the distance and follows it, leading her to the front door of a barn belonging to a widower named Boy (Phoenix). After mentioning he is 1/8 Hopi native American, Boy reveals a cave filled with candles and voodoo dolls that he believes have magical powers, which he spends his time making Kachina dolls, waiting for the world to end.

Griet (Scarlett Johansson) is a shy girl living in the Dutch Republic in 1665. Her father, a Delftware painter, has recently gone blind, rendering him unable to work and putting his family in a precarious financial situation. To help matters, Griet is sent to work as a maid in the household of famed painter Johannes Vermeer (Colin Firth). Griet works hard, almost wordlessly, in the lowest position in a harsh hierarchy, doing her best despite spiteful treatment by one of Vermeer's children. While she is on a routine shopping trip outside the house, a butcher's son, Pieter (Cillian Murphy), notices Griet and falls in love with her, even though she is slow to return his affections.

The year is 1918, and Max Rothman (John Cusack), a fictional Munich art dealer, is a veteran of the Third Battle of Ypres, where he lost his right arm during the latter stages of World War I, effectively ending his career as a painter. He returns to Germany and opens a modern art gallery. He is married to Nina (Molly Parker), but also has a mistress, Liselore von Peltz (Leelee Sobieski). Through a chance encounter, Rothman is approached by a young Adolf Hitler (Noah Taylor), a war veteran as well, disgruntled over Germany's loss during the conflict and the country's humiliation by the signing of the Versailles Treaty; Hitler wishes to have his artwork drawings displayed.

The series starts in Baghdad at an undetermined time (since the story teller seems to live during the 8th century, but the stories that are told take place during the era of muskets, Englishmen, and queue-era Chinese hairstyles, which means they take place in the 17th century at the earliest). The Sultan Shahryar (Dougray Scott) has gone mad after accidentally killing his treacherous wife during a failed coup d'état, which she had planned with Shahryar's brother Schahzenan (James Frain). In his madness, Shahryar believes that all women now want to kill him, but the law states that the Sultan must be married again or the throne will be passed to his brother. Shahryar therefore orders Grand Vizier Ja'Far (Jim Carter) to bring him one of his concubines from the harem to marry and then have executed the next day.

Une troupe théâtrale propose le rôle principal de leur pièce Noodweer à Willem « Uli » Bouwmeester, un ancien artiste de revue de 78 ans. Pour Uli, qui n'a connu que des rôles d'arrière-plan dans des petits théâtres, c'est la chance de sa vie. Pendant les répétitions, il se découvre un talent indéniable. The film begins in the Elizabethan era shortly before the death of Queen Elizabeth I. On her deathbed, Elizabeth promises an androgynous young nobleman named Orlando a large tract of land and a castle built on it along with a generous monetary gift which she will only bequeath to him if he consents to her command, "Do not fade. Do not wither. Do not grow old." Both he and his heirs will keep the land and inheritance forever. Orlando acquiesces and resides in splendid isolation in the castle for a couple of centuries, during which time he dabbles in poetry and art. His attempts to befriend a celebrated poet, however, backfire when the poet ridicules his verse. Orlando then travels to Constantinople as British ambassador to the Turks, but he is almost killed in a diplomatic fracas there. Waking up the next morning, he learns something even more startling: he has physically transformed into a woman overnight.
