Il s’est intéressé au spectacle depuis l’enfance. Après un diplôme à la Toyotama High School au Japon, il rejoint une troupe théâtrale. Plus tard, il obtient une médaille d’or lors d’une prestation dans «Birth of Comedians». À partir de là, il collectionne des rôles à la télévision japonaise dans «Evil Grandmother» sur Fuji TV ou «RinRinto» sur NHK.
Aujourd’hui, il interprète ses propres pièces comme Life Never Stops au GyanGyan Theater à Shibuya, ce qui lui confère une grande popularité. The film starts by telling the story of Tony's father Takitani Shozaburo, a jazz trombonist from Japan, who spends the Second World War in China. Shozaburo is imprisoned and many of his fellow inmates are executed. He expects he will be executed, and he is shown curled up on the floor of his cell. However, he survives and in 1946 returns to Japan where he marries a distant relative on his mother's side. A year later they have a child, Tony, but Tony's mother dies three days after giving birth to him.

Towards the conclusion of the Second World War, Japan nears defeat as Emperor Hirohito (Issey Ogata) reminisces on the past while being held up in a bunker underneath his Imperial Palace in Tokyo. Hirohito reflects on the foundation of the conflict while attempting to dictate peace terms. Later, U.S. military commander General Douglas MacArthur (Robert Dawson) is sent to bring him through the ruins of Tokyo for a meeting regarding the occupation of the victorious Allied leaders. The two very different men strangely bond after sharing dinner and cigars, after which Hirohito retreats to his personal quarters. Following his admission of personal failures, Hirohito attempts to rebuild his war-ravaged country as a fully developed constitutional nation while his own future remains in doubt, as either the Emperor of Japan or a war criminal.

The movie follows Hajime Hanaoaka as he struggles with his impending retirement from his administrative job at Tokyo Co. Ltd. He plans to retire on his birthday, December 25, after 34 years of service to the company. The film opens with Hanaoaka boarding a train to work. He goes through the motions of his daily schedule, looking troubled and sad. Hanaoaka is realizing, now that he is about to retire, exactly how much of his life was dedicated to his work, and how much he will lose when he has to leave it. When his coworker asks Hanaoaka to write a reflection on his 34 years of work at Tokyo Co., Hanaoaka writes, "It wasn't just my job. It was my life.... I spoke more with my staff than with my own son." To cope with his sadness, Hanaoaka turns to jazz music. He had played the drums in his past, but hadn't done so in a very long time. When some of his coworkers reveal that they, too, can play instruments, a group of them decide to form the Tokyo Co. Swing Band. This puts Hanaoaka in much better spirits, and he and his fellow musicians spend a lot of time together rehearsing and discussing jazz up until their final performance at Hanaoaka's retirement party.
