Joseph Calleia (August 4, 1897 – October 31, 1975) was a Maltese born American singer, composer, screenwriter and actor, both on Broadway and in film.

Biography
Joseph Calleia quitte Malte en 1914 et parcourt l'Europe comme chanteur itinérant (il se produit notamment dans des cafés, avec un petit ensemble instrumental), avant de venir aux États-Unis en 1925. Il participe alors, au théâtre à Broadway, entre 1925 et 1935, à une opérette et sept pièces (il est en outre co-producteur de l'une d'elles en 1930-1931, Grand Hotel, adaptée au cinéma en 1932).Au cinéma, il apparaît entre 1931 (année où il intègre la Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) et 1963 (il se retire ensuite dans son pays natal). On the U.S.-Mexico border, a time bomb is planted in a car. A man and woman enter the vehicle and make a slow journey through town to the U.S. border, the woman (Joi Lansing) insisting that she hears something ticking. Newlyweds Miguel "Mike" Vargas (Charlton Heston), a drug enforcement official in the Mexican government, and Susie (Janet Leigh) pass the car several times on foot. The car crosses the border, then explodes, killing the occupants. (The cut to the exploding car is the first one in the film, the single-camera opening sequence lasting nearly three and one-half minutes.)

Gino, quadragénaire d’origine italienne devenu un florissant propriétaire terrien et éleveur de moutons de l’État du Nevada, ne s’est jamais remis de la mort de sa femme Rossana. C’est pour cela qu’il a demandé par correspondance à Gioia, sœur de la défunte, de devenir sa femme sans toutefois l’avoir jamais rencontrée, car celle-ci vit en Italie. Gioia répond par l’affirmative et Gino va en Italie où il l’épouse puis revient avec elle au ranch familial. On comprend qu’il cherche un substitut à sa très regrettée première femme et incite d’ailleurs Gioia à se comporter comme la défunte. Or elle ne ressemble en rien à sa sœur, ni physiquement ni comme une femme discrète et soumise... Elle se confronte fréquemment à Gino malgré l’affection qu’elle éprouve pour lui alors qu’il ne lui témoigne qu’une triviale attention les moments où il ne la confond pas avec la défunte.

Serenade tells the story of poor vineyard worker Damon Vincenti (Mario Lanza), who becomes an operatic tenor, and is involved with two women — one a high society hostess, the other a Mexican bullfighter's daughter, Juana Montes (Sara Montiel). Highly melodramatic, the film features a great deal of operatic music, all of it sung by Lanza. Of note are the Act III Monologue from Verdi's Otello and an extract from the duet "Dio Ti Giocondi" from the same opera featuring Metropolitan Opera soprano Licia Albanese. Reviewing the film in The New York Times, A.H. Weiler wrote that, "Mr. Lanza, who was never in better voice, makes this a full and sometimes impressive musical entertainment.

Little Pablito is the ten-year-old son of a cruel horse trainer. The trainer is responsible for training a Mexican general's horse to jump for the grand race.
