Kalyan Krishna (Shaam) comes to meet his old friend, Kalyan (Ravi Teja), who is now married to Naina (Ileana), settled in Virginia has become very rich and is still looking for a kick in life. When Krishna asks Kalyan about his son, Kalyan gets angry and says his son is worse than him. Robin Hood (Ravi Teja), is Kalyan's son and despite his father saying, Robin looks for "comfort" more than Kick. Robin was taken out of his mother's womb in only seven months because he felt it was uncomfortable. Robin became a doctor so that if he gets injured, he can treat himself immediately. Robin wishes to start a hospital in Hyderabad with their land, but Kalyan says that it has been grabbed by a goon, Settlement Durga (Ashish Vidyarthi). Robin arrives in India and stays in the rented house of Pandit Ravi Teja (Brahmanandam), but Pandit is continuously tortured by Robin. Robin also challenges Durga that he will get back his land without taking out a hand on him.

Ram (Shaam) and Lakshman aka Lucky (Allu Arjun) are brothers and are polar opposites in nature. Venkat Ramakrishnan (Srikanth), Sevarkodi Senthil (Jiiva) and Panchavan Parivendan aka Pari (Vijay) are three first year engineering students who share a room in the hostel of Ideal Engineering College (IEC), Chennai. Venkat studies engineering to pursue his father's wishes over his own wish – to become a wildlife photographer, while Senthil studies engineering to get his family out of poverty. Pari, on the other hand, studies engineering for his simple passion for machines and devices. He believes that one should follow excellence, not success, as success will take care of itself if excellence is followed. However, this approach to studies is sneered upon by the dean of the college, Professor Virumandi "Virus" Santhanam (Sathyaraj). Virus and the faculty favour Pari's classmate, an NRI student Srivatsan aka "Silencer" (Sathyan), who believes in mindless rote learning over understanding to reach his goals of corporate status. Samar (Veera Bahu), an eight-year-old motherless boy lives with his father in Mumbai who leads a colourful life indulging his sexual passions. Samar is sexually abused by his father and is rescued by his neighbour, a middle aged single woman Meenakshi Amma (Swapna Abraham). She names him Veera, takes him under her wing and protects him. Daunted and chased by the ghosts of his painful past, Veera rapes Meenakshi Amma. She, though reluctant at first, indulges in the act. After coming back to her senses the next morning, she refuses Veera's apology and decides to marry her colleague. On her marriage night, in bed with her husband, Veera stabs the man brutally and sets him and the room on fire. Meenakshi Amma is injured in the fire. Karthik (Silambarasan) is a graduate Mechanical Engineering in Chennai who aspires to become a filmmaker. His friend introduces him to cinematographer Ganesh (Ganesh Janardhanan). With Ganesh's help Karthik becomes an assistant to director K. S. Ravikumar. Karthik's family, who are Tamil Hindu Veerakodi Vellalars (Vellalar), rent Jessie's (Trisha Krishnan) house. Jessie is from a conservative Malayali Nasrani Christian family from Alappuzha, Kerala, that lives upstairs. Karthik falls in love with Jessie the moment he meets her. Karthik tries to interact with Jessie (Trisha), who is afraid of speaking to men around her strict father, and ends up angering her. Unable to hide his feelings any longer, Karthik confesses his love for her; she does not respond. A few days later, Karthik learns from his sister that Jessie has gone to Kerala to visit her grandmother. He and Ganesh end up in Kerala to look for her. After several days, he finds her and apologises. She introduces him to her family in Kerala as her "classmate". Jessie denies she has any feelings for him but agrees to be his friend. On the train journey back home, however, the two get close and share a kiss. Karthik (Naga Chaitanya) is a mechanical engineering graduate but aspires to become a filmmaker. Through his friend, Karthik gets introduced to director Puri Jagannadh. With his support,Karthik family, who are Hindus, rents the ground floor of a two-storeyed house which belongs to the Thekekuttus. Busy Karthik is unable to attend to her calls and messages; Jessie is unable to reach him. After a tense phone call from Jessie, Karthik goes back one night to check on her. An angry and hurt Jessie makes a final decision to break up with Karthik because of her father's strong disapproval of their love.
