Marco Risi (born 4 June 1951) is an Italian film director, screenwriter, film producer and cinematographer.

Born in Milan, he is son of director Dino Risi. After graduated from Liceo Scientifico, Risi joined the faculty of philosophy, but abandoned his studies after two years. He began his career as an assistant of his uncle, Nelo Risi, for A Season in Hell (1971) and thereafter for directors such as Duccio Tessari, Steno, Alberto Sordi. He also collaborated with some scripts for films directed by his father. He made his directorial debut in 1977, with the RAI television documentary Appunti su Hollywood. After three quite successful comedy films, since 1987 Risi's cinema focused into more complex social and political issues, such as the military service seen as a traumatic experience (Soldati - 365 all'alba), the juvenile delinquency in and out of prison (Mery per sempre and Ragazzi fuori), the Aerolinee Itavia Flight 870 disaster (Il muro di Gomma), the gang rape phenomenon (Il branco) and the Giancarlo Siani murder (Fort Apache Napoli).

In 1989 Risi's Mery per sempre won the Special Grand Prize of the Jury at the Montréal World Film Festival. For his 1990 film Ragazzi fuori Risi won the David di Donatello Award for for Best Director and a Silver Osella for Best Cinematography at the 47th Venice International Film Festival.

In 1991 Risi started, together with Maurizio Tedesco, a film production company, "Sorpasso Film". In 1998 he won the Nastro d'Argento for Best Producer for Ferzan Özpetek's Hamam.

The film tells the story of the Michelucci family, from the 1970s to the present day: the central character is the stunningly beautiful Anna, the lively, frivolous and sometimes embarrassing mother of Bruno and Valeria. Everything begins in the Summer of 1971, at the annual Summer beauty pageant held at Livorno’s most popular bathing establishment. Anna is unexpectedly crowned “Most Beautiful Mother”, unwittingly stirring the violent jealousy of her husband, a Non-commissioned officer of Carabinieri. From then on, chaos strikes the family and for Anna, Bruno and his sister Valeria, it is the start of an adventure that will only end thirty years later. The whole movie is set when Bruno, a high school teacher who ended up living in Milan after managing to escape from Livorno and his mother, returns to his hometown to be at his mother’s side during her very last days, remembering all those key episodes of his family life through a long series of flashbacks.

Mery per sempre is set in Malaspina, a juvenile detention centre in Palermo, Sicily, during the 1980s. The protagonist, Marco Terzi (Michele Placido), is a teacher who has transferred to Palermo from Milan. He obtains a position as teacher inside the institution, and has great difficulty in establishing a rapport with the young, hostile students; in particular, Natale Sperandeo (Francesco Benigno), the leader of the group, who is inside for murder, and Pietro Giancone (Claudio Amendola). Terzi's situation is further complicated when Mario Libassi (Alessandro Di Sanzo), a transvestite prostitute, nicknamed Mery, falls in love with him. With the passing of time, however, Terzi slowly gains the respect and admiration of his students, even from the most hardened of the young men.
