Otho Lovering (December 1, 1892 – October 25, 1968) was an American filmmaker with about eighty editing credits on feature films and television programs. He was the son of Frank Lovering, a stenographer, and Georgie Lovering. He worked for Vitagraph Studios as a film printing foreman, according to his 1917 draft registration card.
A highlight of Lovering's career was his editing of director John Ford's classic Western film Stagecoach (1939). Lovering's co-editor was Dorothy Spencer, with whom Lovering had already edited several films starting in 1937. The pair were nominated for the Academy Award for Film Editing for the film. Over 20 years later, Ford picked Lovering as his editor again following the 1961 death of Jack Murray, who had edited most of Ford's films in the 1940s and 1950s. Lovering edited four films, from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) through Ford's last feature film, 7 Women (1966).

The story picks up as Father Dick Ball in San Diego, California, tells the story of his childhood friend, John Joseph Montgomery, who was the first American to ever fly a glider plane in 1883. As early as 1879, John told his girlfriend Regina Cleary about his dreams of flying, although his family was very much opposed to this idea and considered him a fool. Regina believed in him, and secretly supported his work, until the first test flight in 1883, which was successful. John named his flying machine "aeroplane".

In the state of Virginia in 1864, during the American Civil War, family patriarch Charlie Anderson (James Stewart) and his six sons Jacob, John, James, Nathan, Henry, and Boy (who is 16) run the family farm, while his daughter Jennie (Rosemary Forsyth) and daughter-in-law Ann (Katharine Ross) take care of the housework. The family has no slaves. Though Charlie attends church weekly and considers himself a "God fearing" man, he doesn't give God credit for anything, but takes credit for himself especially during dinner prayer. He internally blames God for taking his wife from him. His family is constantly late for church and will force people out of their seats to make room for his family, much to the annoyance of the preacher and congregation.
