La paix d'un couvent est troublé par une série de phénomènes étranges, inexplicables voire meurtriers. Selon l'une des nonnes, Satan en personne a pris possession du lieu. La mère supérieure, sœur Vincenza, fait appel à un exorciste, afin d'enquêter sur ces mystères mais sans aucun succès. L'arrivée d'un nouveau et jeune prêtre, père Valerio, spécialiste en parapsychologie, dévoile les inavouables secrets qui hantent le couvent et ses occupants. Bruno Martel (Luc Merenda) is a "Z movie" actor with hero syndrome, often quarrelling with directors. He meets Doris (Susanna Javicoli) an actress who is obsessed with Ophelia but cannot get any Shakespearean bookings. One day, during a nervous breakdown, Bruno "rescues" Doris from the set, leaving the town to encounter various absurd situations. They meet an old anarchist (Alberto Sorrentino) who thinks he is Giuseppe Garibaldi and the three are locked at a mental asylum where Doris commits suicide. Bruno and "Garibaldi" escape and take refuge at an awkward petrol station run by Florence (Adriana Asti) and her invalid husband Joe (Alberto Lupo).

At night in her bayside mansion, wheelchair-bound Countess Federica (Isa Miranda) is attacked and strangled to death by her husband Filippo Donati (Giovanni Nuvoletti). In turn, an assailant suddenly stabs him to death. Donati's corpse is then dragged to the bay. The police find what they believe to be a suicide note written by the Countess. Donati's murder goes undiscovered.
