Soumendu Roy (born 1933) is an Indian cinematographer most known for his work with noted director, Satyajit Ray films, starting with Teen Kanya (1961), when Subrata Mitra developed an eye-problem, though he has earlier shot Ray's documentary Rabindranath Tagore (1961) and has been an assistant to Subrata in post Pather Panchali films.

Biography

D'abord premier ou deuxième assistant opérateur dans les années 1950, Soumendu Roy est notamment aux côtés du chef opérateur Subrata Mitra sur le tournage de La Complainte du sentier de Satyajit Ray (1955, avec Kanu Banerjee et Sharmila Tagore).

Devenu lui-même chef opérateur à l'occasion d'un film sorti en 1959, il retrouve Satyajit Ray sur un documentaire consacré à Rabindranath Tagore et pour le film à sketches Trois filles (avec Soumitra Chatterjee et Aparna Sen), tous deux sortis en 1961.

Jusqu'en 1993, il dirige les prises de vues d'une quarantaine de films indiens (y compris plusieurs documentaires), travaillant principalement avec Satyajit Ray. Parmi les dix-neuf autres films du tandem, mentionnons Le Lâche (1965, avec Soumitra Chatterjee), Tonnerres lointains (1973, avec Babita et Soumitra Chatterjee) et Les Joueurs d'échecs (1977, avec Sanjeev Kumar et Richard Attenborough). Leur ultime collaboration est pour La Maison et le Monde (1984, avec Soumitra Chatterjee et Victor Banerjee).

Au cours de sa carrière, Soumendu Roy gagne quatre National Film Awards de la meilleure photographie, entre autres pour Tonnerres lointains et Les Joueurs d'échecs pré-cités.

After a horrific accident while performing a stunt for the circus, trapeze artist Shibu finds himself restricted to his bed. In compensation, the manager agrees to pay only ₹ 15,000 to Shibu's family, which according to Shibu's juniors is a minuscule amount. They are angry but helpless as the only source of regular income for them is the circus. Sympathizing with the struggle of Shibu and his family, Khoka (Dulal Sarkar), Shibu's closest friend, decides to protest against the manager and hence leaves his job and take on total responsibility for Shibu's family. The family struggles with social apathy towards dwarves and poverty then takes a turn when Khoka realizes that he is in love with Shibu's daughter, Soma (Debalina Roy).

After years of painstaking research at the cost of his personal life, Dr. Dipankar Roy (Pankaj Kapoor) discovers a vaccine for leprosy. The news is flashed over television and overnight, an insignificant junior doctor receives international recognition. Professional jealousy and abuse of power threaten Dr. Roy, even as the Secretary of Health reprimands him for breaking the news to the press. He is asked to report to the Director of Health. Professional colleagues Dr. Arijit Sen and Dr. Ramananda invite him to a lecture but it is merely a pretence to humiliate him. Dr. Roy suffers a mild heart attack but he refuses to go to the hospital. His wife (Shabana Azmi) and a few others like Dr. Kundu (Anil Chatterjee) and Amulya (Irfan Khan) stand by Dr. Roy, but the harassment continues; a letter from a British foundation, John Anderson Foundation, is suppressed and Dr. Roy transferred to a remote village. The last straw is two American doctors receiving credit for discovering the same vaccine. Dr. Roy is shattered.However, at the end Dr. Roy gets an invitation from John Anderson Foundation inviting him to be a part of an eminent group of scientists working on other diseases . Dipankar Roy realizes that his research was fruitful. He also decides to accept the invitation as he just wants to work for the betterment of mankind.

Gautam, a photo journalist with revolutionary ideas, leaves his job as his editor fails to publish the true happenings of the society in their newspaper. The film begins where Mukul Dhar (played by Kushal Chakraborty), a kid who is said to be able to remember events of his previous life, stays up late into the night and draws sketches about peacocks, forts and of battles that he claims to be the battles he had seen, and soon receives the media attention. This finally ended up his father narrating the following incidents to Prodosh Mitter, at his residence about where he met Dr. Hemanga Hajra (Sailen Mukherjee), a parapsychologist, in his book store who in turn enthusiastically offers for help believing it might also help him in his research. After listening to Mukul's descriptions of deserts and peacocks, Dr. Hajra guesses that the place he describes might be in the deserts of Rajasthan. Mukul also mentions that he lived in the Golden Fortress [Sonar Kella] and that their house had lots of gems. Dr. Hajra decides to take Mukul on a trip to Rajasthan hoping this may shed deeper light into such parapsychological phenomenon, as well as help cure the boy.
