The film opens with Arasu (Sarath Kumar) murdering a person in Mumbai. Later the story shifts to Kumbakonam where he is an assistant to a temple priest (Delhi Ganesh). Soon the priest’s daughter Meera (Simran) falls in love with Arasu. At the stroke of interval Arasu sheds his mask and murders a rowdy who is out from jail and this shocks everybody. Then in a flashback he tells that his father (Sarath Kumar) believes in taking law into his hands and thus had lot of enemies. When he confronts a bad guy (Sai Kumar) and humiliates him, the villains later kills Arasu’s father. The rest of the story is how Arasu takes revenge.

Sakthivel Gounder (Sarath Kumar) is one of the most respected, educated and wealthiest men in his district. While his two elder sons and daughter are all well educated, his last son Chinnarasu (Sarath Kumar) is considered a dunce owing to his poor academic history. In a flashback, it is revealed that Chinnarasu once loved and adored Gowri(Priya Raman) who was his wife to be until she attempted suicide to prevent this union as Chinnarasu was uneducated. Chinnarasu shoulders the entire blame and declares to his father that he is not interested in marrying Gowri and earned his father's wrath.

Pandian (Pandiarajan), a sale representative, gets married with Rajeswari (Ranjitha). Pandian's mother Vadivu (Vadivukkarasi) is a miser while his father Velmurugan (Manivannan) is a good man and they also have three daughters. Vadivu takes advantage of Rajeswari's salary and dowry. For the marriage of her first daughter Malini (Latha), Vadivu uses Rajeswari's jewels. Then, the groom (Thyagu) losses his job, so Pandian and Rajeswari decide to abortion for the benefit of the family. In the meantime, Malini becomes pregnant. Rajeswari resigns her job whereas Vadivu expected a lot on Rajeswari's salary. One day, Vadivu immolates Rajeswari but Velmurugan saves her at time. Rajeswari leaves Pandian's house and begins to look for a job. Despite the fact that she looks for job everywhere, she didn't find. So she becomes a dressmaker and after that, she becomes the entrepreneur of a clothes factory. Meanwhile, Pandian's family are crippled with debts. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.

Karunamurthy (Kitty), an honest Home Minister, is forced, to help the terrorists to kill the current Governor, to save his daughter Priya (Lisa Ray). Nethaji (Sarath Kumar), an honest journalist, runs a newspaper called 'India'. He falls in love with Priya. Baba (Babu Antony) is a terrorist who smuggling arms with his right-hand Dharma (Vimalraj). Nethaji saves the scientist Shivashankari (Manimala) from the terrorists and Charan (Charan Raj), a police officer, congrats him and arrests Baba. Dharma hurts Nethaji's sister and Ammu, he later kidnaps Ammu. Dharma threatens Nethaji to kill Ammu and Nethaji is forced to kidnap Shivashankari. Nethaji kidnaps her and saves his niece, later Charan arrests Nethaji. The rest of story is how he will be able to prove himself innocent and will punish the terrorists.

Rangan (Nasser) is a very ugly man and therefore lives a tough life. He is kicked out of jobs, ill-treated constantly, and the girl he loves hates him. (Think "The Elephant Man.") Then one day, Rangan goes to the house of his make-up artist friend (Manivannan) and finds a strange mask that he picks up and wears. The mask adheres to his face, and Rangan becomes very handsome. (Think "The Mask"). With the Mask, Rangan generates followers, becomes a film star, and gets a wife who loves him solely for his handsome face (Roja). Nearing the end, Rangan takes off the Mask for a moment, and wishes people would respect him for who he is on the inside. His wife walks in, sees his ugly face, and throws him out, mistaking him for a robber. Rangan's former followers throw him to the side. Deciding that only beauty can bring him respect, Rangan puts the mask back on.

Velan (Ramarajan) is the manager of the village market and is a respected man. He loves dearly his only sister Lakshmi (Apoorva) who is the village's school teacher. Sundari (Swathi) and her father (R. Sundarrajan) come to Velan's village. Velan and Sundari fall in love with each other whereas Lakshmi and the rural development officer Selvam (Vaasan) fall in love with each other. In the meantime, Velan and the village chief Rasappan (Manivannan) decide to arrange the marriage between Lakshmi and the wicked Rasappan's son Manikkam (Ponvannan). One day, Selvam breaks the village's rule and he is beaten at the village court. Lakshmi finally reveals the love between them and they get married. Selvam is not a rural development officer but a police officer who urges to arrest Velan. In the past, Velan killed a local rowdy who was in fact Selvam's father. Selvam arrests Velan and Velan is sent in jail. Manikkam becomes the new manager of the village market. Without sufficient evidences, the court releases Velan and he comes back to his village. Now, Velan has to face Selvam and Manikkam. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.
