Corsair is a 1931 American crime drama written, produced and directed by Roland West. The film is based on the 1931 novel Corsair, a Pirate in White Flannels by Walton Green and takes place in and was shot during the era of Prohibition in the United States. The film stars Chester Morris and Thelma Todd (credited as Alison Loyd).

Synopsis

A college football hero, John Hawks (Morris) lets himself be goaded by a wealthy socialite, Alison Corning (Loyd/Todd), into forgoing a job coaching the college team to be "a real man, and make real money" in the big city with her father, Stephen Corning (Emmett Corrigan), on Wall Street. He soon has more than he can stomach, making money by bilking the poor out of their meager savings with junk bonds. Mr. Corning tells John he doesn't have it what it takes to succeed in the brutal world of share trading. John replies he will seek a new line of work where he will not go after elderly widows' savings.

While discussing heredity, a man recalls the story of two orphan girls to a pair of cohorts at a ball. Angel (Carmen) is adopted by crooks who teach her to steal, while Evelyn (Valli) is the criminally inclined girl adopted by a wealthy family. When Angel steals a watch from a passenger on the train, the man refuses to press charges and enlists her help in his confidence scheme in Havana. Evelyn is engaged to marry the promising author Robert Ellington (Austin), but after a quarrel, the writer goes to Havana and meets and falls for Angel. Ellington is scheduled to leave on a ship but gives his ticket to Johnson (Albertson), the secret agent and con man. Angel watches tearfully as the boat pulls away before Ellington reveals he loves her, and the two are left in happiness. The film ends as the story teller turning and pointing out the couple dancing at the ball.

The film starts in Chinatown. Harry Evans (Ned Sparks) is a pickpocket, and he passes the Frog (John Wray), who is pretending to be a cripple. Harry gives the Frog a watch, which he just stole from a man. The Frog, who crawls, is almost hit by a car. The guests on the car are guests traveling to Chinatown for New Year's, and some give money to the Frog, convinced he is hurt. After while a young woman, Helen (Sylvia Sidney) is given a seat by a gentleman. She then tries to pick money out of this man's pocket, and she flees with the money, and he soon catches up to her. In tears, she tells him that her mother has died, and she has no money, he then contributes a few dollars, and soon the public, watching, gives her money. She returns to the apartment later that night, and is visited by friends; the Frog, and Harry Evans. As they start counting money, the door opens, outside of it, is leader Doc Madison (Chester Morris), who was the man who Helen tried taking money from, as a scheme.
