Anand Mathur lives a middle-class lifestyle along with his sister, Asha, and retired Magistrate and widower dad in Bombay's suburbs and studies in Mithibai College of Arts. He wins the college annual day singing competition, angering his nearest rival, Rama Kumar. He subsequently comes to know that Asha is in love with Rama's brother, Vinod, and arranges their marriage. After the marriage, he finds out that Vinod, Rama and their aunt, Leela, had expected a huge dowry, and on receiving none have now started putting pressure on Asha to get some money and a fridge. Anand arranges for money and gets them a fridge. Vinod and his family then start to create misunderstandings between Asha and Anand albeit in vain. Vinod becomes more and more greedy and possessive about Asha and refuses to permit her to see her dad and brother. When Anand's dad passes away, Vinod manages to get a motorcycle from Anand but continues to create a barrier between brother and sister, so much so that Asha is convinced that Anand is up to no good. Then one day they get the news that Anand has embezzled money from his employer, Vijaya Bank, Santa Cruz Branch. Subsequently they learn that while absconding, Anand has met with a fatal accident. Quite unknown to them Anand is very much alive and with the help of wealthy smuggler, Kailashnath Rana, whose life he saved, is now masquerading as Rana himself, has befriended and seduced Rama, got married to her and is all set to avenge his humiliation at Vinod's hands. Before he could complete his vendetta, he is abducted by Kailashnath's arch-enemy, A.P. Lall, and held until Kailashnath himself comes to negotiate his release. Will Kailashnath negotiate with A.

Mili (Jaya Bhaduri) is a story about a girl who suffers from pernicious anemia, a disease considered untreatable during the period the film was produced. Her lively, inquisitive and cheerful demeanour spreads happiness in everyone's life. She becomes an inspiration to her new neighbour Shekhar (Amitabh Bachchan) who is a drunkard and always depressed. With her cheerful ways she changes Shekhar and he falls in love with her, unaware of her ailment. When he comes to know about it, he thinks of going away as he cannot bear to see her die. A reproach from a neighbour makes him reconsider his decision. As he loves the girl, he offers to marry her and take her abroad for her treatment. The film begins and ends with a scene of a jet aircraft taking off, ostensibly carrying the couple to Switzerland where they hope to find a cure.

Babu is a young man who works as a rickshaw puller and he has fallen in love with Kammo.His only true friend is Shambu Nath.One day he helps Shankerlal and his family and in return Shankerlal invites him to his house.Instantly the whole family including Shankerlal's wife and Pinky both begin to shower love on Babu. Babu having led a tough childhood feels very ecstatic and feels grateful to Shankerlal on having provided him food,clothes and more importantly respect given to him. Meanwhile a goon in the village rapes Kammo and Babu kills him and thereby lands in jail. After his release he finds Pinky begging in the streets and then he gets shocked as to how a rich girl has been forced to beg. Then he realises that now Pinky's mother is a widow. His sole aim now becomes to help this widow and her child. He gives up his personal life, drives a hand-drawn rickshaw, saves some money, so that he can buy provisions for them, as well as send the child, Pinky, to a decent school. Pinky then grows up and later starts disliking Babu.The rest of the story is how Pinky realises her folly later on, how Pinky's mother feels indebted to Babu for having helped them in return for one nights shower of affection on Babu by Shankerlal.
