Synopsis
The film centres on Jeff Stenn (Adam Baldwin), a successful writer who is happily married to his wife, Tree (Jennifer Gates). Jeff, due to a shortage of money, accepts a job to write a screenplay about a real-life homicide that happened 35 years earlier. A seemingly psychotic director (Udo Kier) who believed that creativity had unleashed dark forces, killed his pregnant wife and in-laws for no apparent reason before committing suicide.Actors

The film concerns a writer named Paula Martin (Anna Brecon) who having published a bestseller, retreats to her family's gothic country house, Crow's Hall, to focus on writing a new book. Struggling with Writer's Block along with nightmares of her abusive childhood, she takes on an attractive female assistant named Linda (Jane March). As Paula's nightmares persist, Linda provides her with comfort and support, even allowing Paula to sleep in her bed. When Paula finds Linda editing her novel one morning, she flies into a rage. Linda reacts by murdering Paula's cat. Unaware of the cat's disappearance and feeling guilt for shouting at Linda, Paula apologises and admits that she is impressed by Linda's additions to the book. Linda offers to write some more of it and give Paula the opportunity to take the day off. Linda then takes control of the book and Paula's life, screaming at her to send the staff home when the noise they make distracts her. Paula, too timid to fight back, meekly obeys Linda and becomes bedridden with Linda locking her in her room. When a successful writer named Robert Gainor (Billy Murray) comes to the house to interview Paula, Linda answers the door, claiming to be Paula and invites Gainor into the kitchen where they open a bottle of wine and eat some cheese with biscuits. When Gainor asks Linda if he can record their interview, she flirts with him before slashing his throat and revealing that her brother abused her when she was thirteen and she stabbed him to death. She hides Gainor's body in the cellar and tells Paula that he simply came to interview her but Linda told him that she was busy and he left. When the housekeeper, Mrs. Brown (Linda Hayden) finds Gainor's body, Linda kills her too.

The film follows Harry Russo, a psychotic, drug-addicted crossdresser and film writer who is obsessed with a puppet named Rubberneck, the mascot of his favorite film which his girlfriend, Drew, had given him. Harry believes Rubberneck speaks to him, instructing him to commit acts of violence, such as killing "whores" (or "who-ers" as Harry pronounces it). Egged on by Rubberneck, Harry fatally chokes two prostitutes (mutilating and having anal sex with their bodies afterward) and stabs his psychiatrist to death.

Peter Neal, an American writer of violent horror novels, is in Italy to promote his latest work, Tenebrae. He is accompanied by his literary agent, Bullmer and his assistant, Anne. Neal is unaware that he has also been followed to Rome by his embittered ex-wife, Jane. Just before Neal arrived in Rome, Elsa, a young female shoplifter, was murdered with a razor by an unseen assailant. The murderer sends Neal a letter informing him that his books have inspired him to go on a killing spree. A man knocks on a teenage girl's door, claiming to be in need of directions. When the girl leaves to answer the phone, the man sneaks in, and grabs her when she returns. Physically and verbally assaulting the girl, the man drags her into a bedroom by the neck, and rapes her. The rapist ejaculates and urinates on the teen's face, and asphyxiates her with a bag while yelling that Richard Ramirez is his "God". Tracking the killer is obnoxious Channel 5 Action News reporter Roberto Negro, who has been receiving taunting letters from the murderer, most of them containing rants about how he worships Satan.
