Palaivana Paravaigal (English: Desert Birds) is a 1990 Tamil crime film directed by Senthilnathan. The film features Sarath Kumar, Anandaraj, newcomer Udhayan and newcomer Dharani in lead roles. The film, produced by K. S. Srinivasan and K. S. Sivaraman, had musical score by newcomer Ilayagangai and was released on 15 September 1990.

Synopsis

Mamu (Sarath Kumar) and Machi (Anandaraj), two orphans and heartless criminals, are sentenced to the death penalty. Raja (Udhayan), their cellmate, is an innocent youth who is in love with Kaveri (Dharani). Mamu and Machi decide to save Raja and they go to his village before their death sentence.

The film begins with the murder of a politician committed by the terrorist Azhagam Perumal (Anandaraj). The corrupt finance minister Ponnurangam (Goundamani) wants to become the central minister therefore he orders Azhagam Perumal for money to create the chaos in Tamil Nadu. So Azhagam Perumal first sets off a bomb in a head office of Ponnurangam's opposite party. 22 people died during the bomb blast. Consequently, the Central Minister (Raadhika Sarathkumar) charges the Anti Terrorist Squad's Assistant Commissioner Suriya (R. Sarathkumar) to track down the terrorist group. Minor Muthurasu (Nassar) is a rich man in his village and womaniser who raped the village girls. While in the nearby village, Ellaichami (R. Sarathkumar) is a brave village chief and he protects the village. Ellaichami's sister (Gowri) and the village's veterinarian (Vetri Vigneshwar) are in love. One day, Kaveri (Rupini) comes to Ellaichami's village to find out the person who raped her but she didn't see the culprit's face. Ellaichami promises to not prepare any ceremony until he catches the rapist. In the meantime, Ellaichami's sister becomes pregnant. Ellaichami, worried to prepare her wedding as soon as possible, lies that he raped Kaveri. Ellaichami gets married with Kaveri and his sister gets married with her lover at the same time.

Manimaran (Sarath Kumar), his father Poochi (S. V. Ramadas) and his grandfather Nagappan (M. N. Nambiar) are short-tempered persons who beat the villagers for a simple quarrel. Only, Manimaran's mother, Sivagami (Lakshmi) can control them. Uma (Rajeswari), Manimaran's sister, gets married with a man of another village. Manimaran falls in love with Vaidehi (Devayani), a Brahmin girl, and gets married with her without her permission. In a fight against Manimaran, the antagonist becomes a blind in one eye and decides to take revenge on Manimaran. When Manimaran drives his pregnant sister, the antagonist stops him but Manimaran beats the antagonist and his henchmen. Uma comes too late at the hospital and dies with her baby. Vaidehi leaves their house because of her husband's behavior who brings Uma's death. Manimaran changes his behavior and tries to convince Vaidehi to come back home.
