The Mystery of the Yellow Room is a 1919 American motion picture crime drama made by the Mayflower Photoplay Company and distributed through Realart Pictures Corporation. Emile Chautard was a French actor, director, and producer. Chautard was 55 years old when "The Mystery of the Yellow Room" was released in 1919. The Mystery of the Yellow Room (in French Le mystère de la chambre jaune) was first a novel by Gaston Leroux. The novel was one of the first locked room mystery crime fiction novels. It was first published in France in the periodical L'Illustration from September 1907 to November 1907, then in its own right as a book in 1908.

There are a few remakes of the film in 1930, 1949 and in 2003.

Synopsis

A young reporter solves a mystery crime. The fictional reporter is Joseph Rouletabille. He works on a complex, and seemingly impossible, crime in which the criminal appears to disappear from a locked room.

Mary Hamilton an heiress tires of fortune hunting men and takes her secretary Peggy to join a group of gypsies undercover. As the women head into the woods Sir Kenneth one of Mary's close male friends follows them dressed as a gypsy. Jack Hutton a wealthy landowner wants the gypsies off his land and has Sir Kenneth jailed. Hutton then seeks out Mary's camp, not knowing her true identity, and wants her thrown off the land as well but then catches her swimming in a moonlit pond. Hutton falls in love with Mary and Mary asks him to dine. When Hutton leaves a band of gypsies attacks Mary's wagon and tie her up. Jack then tries to rescue Mary but is beaten by the gypsies. Sir Kenneth has by then been released from jail and arrives with Peggy, the two of them are now in love. After they cut Mary loose, Sir Kenneth and Peggy head off to be married leaving Mary to care for Hutton. As Hutton recuperates Mary tells him the truth that she is an heiress and not a gypsy as she had led Hutton to believe. They are later married.

Mrs. Newell is jealous of her son Oliver's interest in Penelope Mason and she does everything she can to keep the two apart. As described in a film magazine, Harry Althrop (Dexter), a young American, is in love with Princess Cordelia (Cavalieri) and when he finds his funds are getting low he forges the signature of Thomas Lawton (Laffey), the American ambassador and a close friend of his father, to a check so that he might buy the beautiful Italian princess some jewelry. Count Rudolph Frizel (Hale) of Austria, anxious to obtain information concerning Italy's stand in an approaching war, threatens to expose Harry unless he provides the documents from the American embassy. It turns out that the specific documents are readily available with the ambassador, and Harry picks them up and gives them to the Count. This act is discovered by the ambassador and Harry is brought to trial. Cordelia learning of Harry's predicament, goes to Count Frizel and kills him to obtain the documents. The documents are then returned to the embassy, and Harry is released. Cordelia returns home, takes poison and dies in her lovers arms. The film ends with Cordelia on her bier.

As described in a film magazine, John Colton (Warde) sends his son Jack (Vaughn) to Russia to compete the details of a loan to that government. While there, Jack assists the Countess Olga (Eagels), who is hounded by spies, out of the country. She sails for America and on the steamer meets Vera Ladislaus (Gregory), who is going to stay with the Coltons. The steamer is torpedoed and Vera looses her life. Olga, on arrival in New York, poses as Vera in order to obtain information in the John Colton home as she has been told that he is aiding the Russian government. After being established in the home, the kindness of the Coltons make her regret her situation. Jack's return home and the arrival of Vera's father complicates matters. However, upon Colton's statement to the assembled Russians at their headquarters that he is really helping the cause of freedom, Olga's true feelings to the Coltons, and especial Jack, are seen.

As described in a film magazine, Helen Tremaine (Ferguson) is an extravagant daughter of a wealthy New York man, but becomes impoverished by his death and disillusioned when her friends leave her, save Frederick Lawton (Standing), a man of power and wealth. She does not love Lawton and prefers Kenneth Gordon (Atwill), but he says he is too poor to marry her. She attempts to support herself, but even fails at a job as a film actress. Nearly starving, she marries Lawton as a last resort. He tests her by making her financially independent through a pretend heritage of hers that he claims to have discovered, but she remains a girl of her word. All is well until her former love shows up to win her with a scheme that will enrich him while ruining her husband. The deal goes through, but it is a trap set up by her husband to show her the type of man her former love was. She now sees the nobility in her husband with happy results.
