Trade Tattoo est un court métrage expérimental britannique réalisé par Len Lye, sorti en 1937.

Synopsis

Trade Tattoo est allé encore plus loin que Rainbow Dance dans sa manipulation du processus Gasparcolor. Le métrage original en noir et blanc était constitué d'extraits de documentaires de la GPO Film Unit tels que Night Mail. Lye a transformé ces séquences dans ce qui a été décrit comme le travail le plus complexe de tirage de film et d'étalonnage jamais réalisé. Des mots et des motifs animés se combinent aux séquences en direct pour créer des images aussi complexes et multicouches qu'une peinture cubiste. La musique était assurée par le groupe cubain Lecuona. Avec ses rythmes dynamiques, le film cherche (selon les mots de Lye) à transmettre "un romantisme sur le travail de tous les jours dans tous les domaines de la vie".

A man (Rupert Doone) is holding an umbrella in the rain. Then, he starts dancing, and as he does, the backgrounds completely change. Then, he starts dancing near the ocean, with a woman and fish following. Then, he plays tennis with cel-animated circles as another man watches. A colorful array of shapes follow, and the man sits and thinks, as the shapes come back and images come off the score sheet. The music ends, and a man's voice says the following: 'Post Office Savings Bank puts a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for you', followed by 'No deposit is too small for the Post Office Savings Bank'.

The story focuses on Madame Souza, an elderly woman raising her young grandson, Champion. Souza notices her grandson is sad and lonely, hinted as due to the loss of his parents, so she first tries to get him interested in the piano. When this fails, she buys him a puppy named Bruno to cheer him up. Although he is initially happy, he quickly becomes melancholic once again. After discovering that Champion has a keen interest in road bicycle racing, because it is implied that Champion's deceased parents were bicyclists, she buys him a tricycle. Marge Simpson drops off Maggie at the Ayn Rand School for Tots, where, after going through a security screening, she is classified as being of "average intelligence", upon which a guard carries her past the "Room for Gifted Babies" and puts her in the "Nothing Special" dreary corner. The playtime items are either taken away or eaten by the other babies. A butterfly then makes its way into the room as Maggie's nemesis, Baby Gerald, squashes it on the wall with a mallet and draws a box around it with a crayon. A second butterfly also meets the same fate. Maggie finds a caterpillar and a pop-up book about the life cycle of the butterfly. Realizing that the caterpillar could also meet the fate of the first two butterflies, she tries to protect it from Gerald. The caterpillar later encases itself in a chrysalis and starts to transform. Once the newly formed butterfly emerges, Maggie tries to help it fly out of the window, but Gerald kills it by shutting the blinds on it as it attempts to pass through. Maggie acts as if it was the worst thing she has ever seen and mourns as she falls to the floor. Marge then arrives to pick her up, when it is revealed Maggie's scene was only a ruse to cover the truth: she had slipped her hair bow onto the windowsill and wore the butterfly on her forehead in its place. She then sets the butterfly free as Marge drives her home.
