Paul Hewitt is an 18-year-old amateur photographer, leading an average life with his parents and sister Ella. He is a senior at high school and he is in the middle of making college decisions. His parents have always dreamed for him to become a doctor, but he isn't sure if he even wants go to college. One day, the family Hewitt receives a visit from mother Abby's friend Nina Talbert, whose mother recently died. Nina is a photographer as well, providing covers for music albums. In June 1980, Beth Easton (Christina Ricci) and her recently widowed mother, Kate (Polly Draper) move from Los Angeles to a small town in northern Washington, where they move into Kate's aunt's farmhouse. In 1991, four childhood friends reunite in their hometown of Shelby, Indiana. Samantha Albertson (Demi Moore), a science-fiction writer, narrates the story. One day at school, 11-year-old Kelly Farrow (Vanessa King)'s classmate tells about a relative who accused a family member of molestation and was sent to jail. Sometime later, after being "spanked" by her dad for locking her little brother in the bathroom, Kelly vows to make him pay.
