Thora Birch (born March 11, 1982) is an American actress. She made her early roles in the short-lived sitcom Day by Day and in Purple People Eater (1988), in which she won a Young Artist Award for "Best Young Actress Under Nine Years of Age". Her profile was raised significantly with major parts in films, such as All I Want for Christmas (1991), Patriot Games (1992), Hocus Pocus (1993), Monkey Trouble (1994), Now and Then (1995) and Alaska (1996).

Her breakthrough role came in 1999 with the Academy Award winning film, American Beauty. Her performance was well received by both critics and audiences and brought Birch to international recognition. She later played the lead role in Ghost World (2001) for which she received a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. She appeared in independent films, such as Dark Corners (2006), Train (2008) and Winter of Frozen Dreams (2009). Birch took a break from acting to focus on her personal life, but decided to resume her acting career in 2015.

D'ascendance scandinave, italienne et juive allemande, elle est la fille de Jack Birch et de Carol Connors, acteurs de films pornographiques dans les années 1970 (notamment dans Gorge profonde).

Elle commence sa carrière à 4 ans en auditionnant pour des publicités. À 6 ans, elle tourne dans son premier film Purple People Eater (1988) et gagne un Young Artist Award pour ce rôle. Elle tourne ensuite dans plusieurs séries télévisées, ainsi que dans plusieurs autres films comme Hocus Pocus (1993). Mais c'est le rôle de Jane Burnham dans le film de Sam Mendes American Beauty (1999) qui la révèle au public. Le film est salué par la critique et remporte cinq Oscars dont celui du meilleur film en 2000.

Elle obtient ensuite le rôle d'Enid, une adolescente sarcastique et un peu perdue, dans Ghost World (2001) aux côtés de Scarlett Johansson et Steve Buscemi, puis se fait remarquer la même année dans The Hole, un thriller horrifique qui remporte un petit succès critique et commercial. Dès lors, l'actrice va surtout apparaître dans des films de genre comme Deadline, Train et Vision des ténèbres (Dark Corners). Depuis, sa carrière semble à l'arrêt.

En 2016, elle participe en tant que personnage récurrent à la série Colony, où elle interprète le rôle de Morgan, une informaticienne en lutte contre l'occupant.

Elle a un frère, l'acteur et assistant réalisateur Bolt Birch.

The film begins with a series of security footages of armed bank robberies (one of the robbers was on a crutch) accompanied by the song Louie, Louie. Moore then uses an Encyclopædia Britannica archive video to compare and view modern-day America with the Roman Empire, by juxtaposing depictions of the fall of the Roman Empire with similar modern-day American issues. Thora Birch stars as Liz Murray, one of two daughters of an extremely dysfunctional Bronx family. After her mother Jean Murray (1954-1996) dies of AIDS, which she got from sharing needles during her drug abuse, she gets a 'slap in the face' by her mother's death and begins her work to finish high school, which she amazingly completed in two years, rather than the usual four. She becomes a star student and earns a scholarship to Harvard University through an essay contest sponsored by The New York Times.

Three rebellious teenage girls decide to even the score in the battle of the sexes. Looking back a few years after the events depicted, Jefferson Roth (who, along with her sisters are named after former presidents) tells the story of the last few months of her senior year at a Wisconsin boarding school when she and two girl friends, the naive Lisa and the outrageous Karen, conspire to use a pistol to turn the tables on males after a wealthy older man, with whom Karen had a one night stand, refuses to give her his home phone number. They stage a sexual assault on David, Lisa's on-and-off boyfriend, in an effort to try to be more like their male counterparts. But, it backfires, as all three girls learn they are not able to have sex the way they feel a man can. Their unfaithfulness to their own objective is summed up in Karen's words, just prior to her tragic ending, "I wish I had a boyfriend.
