UFA (formerly Universum Film AG, today UFA GmbH) is a German motion-picture production company headquartered in Babelsberg, a district in the Brandenburg state capital of Potsdam.
Universum Film was established on December 18, 1917 as a direct response to foreign competition in the realm of film and propaganda. UFA was founded by a consortium headed by Emil Georg von Stauß, who was a board member at Deutsche Bank.
In 1925, financial pressures compelled the company to enter into distribution agreements with the American studios Paramount and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to form Parufamet. UFAs weekly newsreels continued to contain reference to the deal with Paramount all the way up to 1940, at which point "Die Deutsche Wochenschau ("The German Weekly Review") was consolidated and used as an instrument of Nazi propaganda.
In March 1927, Alfred Hugenberg, an influential German media entrepreneur and later Minister of the Economy, Agriculture and Nutrition in Hitler's cabinet, purchased Ufa and transferred it to the Nazi Party in 1933.
In 1942, as a result of the Nazi policy of "forcible coordination" known as the Gleichschaltung, Ufa and all of its competitors, including Tobis, Terra, Bavaria Film and Wien-Film, were bundled together with foreign film production companies seized by the Nazis to form one corporation, Ufa-Film (Ufi), with headquarters in Berlin.
After the Red Army occupied the Ufa complex in 1945, and after the privatization of Bavaria and Ufa in 1956, the company was restructured to form Universum Film AG and taken over by a consortium of banks.
In 1964, Bertelsmann's Chief Representative, Manfred Köhnlechner, acquired the entire Universum Film AG from Deutsche Bank, which had previously been the main Ufa shareholder and which had determined the company's business policy as head of the shareholders' consortium. Köhnlechner bought Ufa, which was strongly in debt, on behalf of Reinhard Mohn for roughly five million Deutschmarks. (Köhnlechner: "The question came up as to why not take the entire thing, it still had many gems"). Only a few months later, Köhnlechner also acquired the Ufa-Filmtheaterkette, a movie theater chain, for almost eleven million Deutschmarks.
Today, UFA GmbH (UFA) is the parent company uniting all production activities of Bertelsmann/FremantleMedia in Germany. Up until August 2013, eight subsidiaries operated under the UFA umbrella: UFA Fernsehproduktion, UFA Entertainment, Grundy UFA, Grundy Light Entertainment, UFA Cinema, Teamworx, Phoenix Film and UFA Brand Communication.
In August 2013, UFA underwent an organizational restructuring that simplified the company down to three production divisions. Today, UFA Fiction, UFA Serial Drama and UFA Show & Factual are the three units responsible for production.

The plot begins in 11th-century England, much knowledge having been lost . It is the Dark Ages, and the Church is fighting against 'black magic'. The medical knowledge of Greek physicians like Hippocrates and Galen had been lost to the medicine of medieval Europe, until taught later in schools such as the School of Salerno (after the Arabic-Latin translation movement of the 12th century). In 11th-century England, travelling barber surgeons attempted to supply medical care to the ordinary population, often at the risk of the Church persecuting them for witchcraft.

Première partie Jan Berger est un jeune météorologue qui a passé quatre ans à étudier les tornades dans l'Oklahoma et revient à Berlin. Après son atterrissage à l'aéroport, une canicule anormale domine la ville. Le retour à la réalité le rattrape. La relation avec son père, le professeur Jürgen Berger, le grand météorologue de la station de Berlin-Brandebourg, est toujours brouillée. L'ancien amour de Jan, la jeune docteur Eva Keil, est maintenant avec Bruno Meindorf qui travaille avec le père de Jan. Jan vit d'abord avec Sophie, sa sœur aveugle, qui a une liaison avec Karl Zimmer de la chaîne d'infos N24. Jan trouve dans la compagnie d'assurances Globcare un emploi qui a en partie à voir avec sa recherche sur les tornades. À 280 km à l'ouest de Berlin, se produit une tornade avec des chutes de grêle qu'aucun spécialiste n'avait prévue. Jan se rend sur le site de cette tornade et prévoit le premier la menace de tornades sur la capitale, ce qu'aucun météorologue ne confirme. Seul Andreas Schütte, le chef des pompiers de Berlin, s'intéresse à la thèse de Jan. Mais les moyens politiques et financiers ne suivent pas pour créer un système de prévention qui n'existe pas à Berlin. Bruno donne régulièrement des données du service météorologique à Jan à l'insu de son père. C'est alors que se produisent les premières tempêtes de grêle. Bruno a une rencontre avec Wittenberg, membre du Sénat de Berlin, à laquelle participent Jan et Jürgen Berger. Mais l'élu rejette la théorie de Jan que rien ne prouve et toutes les mesures de protection civile. Avec l'aide de Bruno, Jan emprunte sans le consentement du professeur Berger un véhicule fait pour la recherche, dans lequel monte Eva. Ils constatent la formation d'un orage à proximité de Berlin. Une tornade se produit et se dirige vers le véhicule de recherche.

Abel Tiffauges (Malkovich) is a simple Frenchman at the start of World War II, who loves animals and children. Au début du romantisme allemand, début du XIX siècle. Augustin Sumser est un véritable séducteur de son temps. Après avoir été au séminaire du prince-évêque à Meersburg et à un court apprentissage avec un luthier de Mittenwald, où il a également étudié le monde féminin pour la première fois, il va dans le monde pour rencontrer la vie, comme il le dit. L'ancien docteur Mesmer à Lindau près du lac de Constance le prend sous son aile et et commence à fermer son air hautain et la surdité dans son cœur. Un jour, Augustin rencontre Lady Ann, jeune fille anglaise, bourgeoise, originale et assez jolie. En échange de quelques heures belles et partagées, elle donne à Augustin une boîte à musique. Il est tellement fasciné par ce cadeau unique, son son et son aspect raffiné que Sumser décide de devenir un fabricant de boîtes à musique. Augustin montre de grands talents et bientôt il se fait un nom en tant que créateur de boîte, qui s'étend bien au-delà de Lindau.
